Rare WW2 Flt Sgt Chiefy Powell (617 Sqdn) Signed Signature Piece, With Photo, Mounted Professionally and Framed to an overall size of 12 x 7 inches approx. Powell was the NCO Ground Crew Who Buried Guy Gibsons Dog Nigger. Good condition.Signature Flt Sgt George Edward "Chiefy" Powell Famous member of No 617 Sqn, rare signature Did not fly but was the Squadrons "Mr Fix it" Helped Gibson build the Squadron and made things happen Flt Sgt George Edward "Chiefy" Powell Born in Wrexham and named George Edward after two British kings, Powell had joined the Royal Air Force in 1928 and was by trade an administrator, although he'd served as an air gunner with Coastal Command during the early part of the war. The RAF provided Powell with both home and family. He was an organiser with natural talent for overcoming difficulties. He also had a fair knowledge of aerial combat. But he understood little, nothing at all in real terms, about either bomb-bays or bomb release mechanisms. His trade was airframe technician. It has to be admitted this deficiency had not troubled him much until that afternoon but was immediately acknowledged completely, if with irritated impotence. Powell therefore glared at the bomber with malevolence and as he did so, swore silently, lengthily and comprehensively. But 'bloody hell', were the only words he spoke aloud. There was nobody to hear him. Powell stood alone, in sole charge of the bomber, forage cap cocked rakishly over his right eye, clad in battle-dress, the blouse open at the neck. Legs astride, hands hips, he stared at the aeroplane as though willing it to eject the 'egg' hanging below its belly, by the sheer force of his considerable personality. You bastard!' he snarled, investing the expletive with all the venom Flight Sergeants traditionally direct at anything causing them serious problems. The 'egg' was a dummy - a massive cylinder, made of concrete, weighing 10,000 lbs, an enormous lookalike garden roller - the exact size & weight of a new weapon Chiefy Powell's new squadron was being formed to drop on enemy targets, previously impossible to attack with conventional weapons. The only problem, Chiefy Powell ruefully reflected, was that the bloody weapon would not fall out of the bloody aeroplane, which in turn meant that unless he, Chiefy Powell, got it bloody sorted there would be no bloody raid, either. 'And,' he concluded gloomily to himself, wiping the toothbrush of a moustache clinging to his upper lip with the back of his right hand, 'I've no doubt that it will all be my bloody fault.' Chiefy Powell did not know whether the weapon was a bomb, mine, or what. He did know it was secret. VERY secret. So secret that Guy Gibson, already a legendary figure in Bomber Command and one of the RAF's youngest and most successful Wing Commanders, was about to be given the job of training an elite squadron just to drop it - always providing, of course, Chiefy Powell and his happy band of Erks could solve the problem of persuading the bloody weapon to fall out of the bloody aeroplane. But at 16.30 that Saturday afternoon Wg Cdr Gibson was far from Chiefy Powell's thoughts. Powell's concentration was focused on the miscreant weapon. A None flyer who with Gibson helped to form the original SquadronAll autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. JAMES BOND: GOLDENEYE (1995) - James Bond's (Pierce Brosnan) Suit DisplayJames Bond's (Pierce Brosnan) three-piece suit from Martin Campbell's Bond movie GoldenEye. Bond wore his Brioni suit as he came face-to-face with his old ally Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean). After Bond and Natalya (Izabella Scorupco) escaped from Trevelyan's clutches they found themselves being interrogated by Russian Defence Minister Mishkin (Tcheky Karyo), before chasing General Ourumov (Gottfried John) through the streets of St Petersburg in a tank. The suit is made by Brioni, the bespoke menswear couture house that created the majority of the luxury suits worn by Brosnan in the role of James Bond. Brosnan was integral to the process of developing Bond's look, and was consulted on how his character would dress throughout his tenure. As costume designer Lindy Hemming later recounted: "We wanted him to look modern, but not trendy like someone in advertising. Pierce's own demands were that the designs had to reflect the lightness of modern man, but still be svelte and smooth."The suit is made of blue wool with a silk-effect Brioni logo lining. The suit was made especially for Brosnan in the role, with the jacket labelled "Brioni, Roma" and featuring an Angels & Bermans costumiers label, which reads "1995 Goldeneye Pierce Brosnan". Lot 136

A VERY RARE GILT-DECORATED BLACK-LACQUERED PANEL AND CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER FRAME FOR THE IMPERIAL COURTLate 18th centuryThe black lacquer panel exquisitely decorated in gilt with a mountainous landscape dotted with pavilions, some of the roofs decorated in the kirikane technique, all amidst various trees, and a waterfall on the right from which a boisterous river with swirling currents curves across, some gnarled rocks slightly raised in the takamaki-e technique, all framed by a carved cinnabar lacquer frame with lotus scrolls, an ornate metal hook ontop. 96cm (37 3/4in) wide x 88cm (34 1/2in) high.Footnotes:十八世紀晚期 御用剔紅邊框鑲黑漆描金風景紋屏Provenance: Vanderven Oriental Art, 's-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands; acquired at TEFAF, Maastricht 來源: 於馬斯特里赫特歐洲藝術和古董博覽會,購自荷蘭斯海爾托亨博思古董商Vanderven Oriental ArtThe present panel is exceptionally rare and demonstrates the fascination of the Qing Court with foreign representations as well as its admiration of the technical virtuosity of lacquering techniques and decoration imported from or influenced by Japan. The lavish use of gold on black lacquer became particularly popular during the reign of the Yongzheng emperor, who especially appreciated and collected Japanese gold and silvered lacquer (maki-e). During the Yongzheng reign, Japanese lacquer was presented to the Imperial Court by Sui Hede, Gao Qizhuo and Zhun Tai, the Jiangnan silk manufacturing agent, the Suzhou Imperial inspector and the Superintendent of the Fujian customs house respectively. See Yuancang riben qiqi tezhan, Taipei, 2002, p.19. Yongzheng's appreciation for Japanese lacquer can be seen for example, in the 'Twelve Beauties at Leisure' painted for Prince Yinzhen (the Future Yongzheng emperor), in which one painting shows a woman with a Japanese style black lacquered box with gilt decorated bamboo, illustrated by E.Rawski and J.Rawson, China: The Three Emperors 1662-1795, London, 2005, p.259. Japanese boxes were particularly highly regarded at Court where they were used to store precious objects and antiques; see for example a Japanese lacquer box in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Small Refined Articles of the Study, Shenzhen, 2009, pp.8-9, no.4. Chinese artisans also imitated Japanese lacquer pieces. See for example, a handled case with gold-painted landscape in the same raised technique, in imitation of a Japanese case, mid Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, p.192, no.144.The black lacquer panel in the present lot was probably made in Japan; takamaki-e techniques of slightly raised gold-leaf as can be seen on the rocks of the present lot, was used in Japan, and the landscape scene itself appears to have its origins in Japanese designs. See for example, a Japanese black lacquer and gilt-decorated cabinet (one of a pair), at the Qing Court Collection, with a very similar landscape but with a party of people in Edo period dress, illustrated in The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City, New Haven and London, 2010, p.178, pl.54. The same cabinet is also illustrated in A Lofty retreat from the Red Dust: The Secret Garden of Emperor Qianlong, Beijing, 2012, nos.44 and 45, where it is described as Qianlong. The cinnabar lacquer frame on the present lot, however, is demonstrably Chinese. See for example a related black lacquer and mother-of-pearl-inlaid panel with cinnabar lacquer frame, Yongzheng/Qianlong, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, vol.2, Hong Kong, 2002, p.207, no.179.Despite the lack of official diplomatic ties between Qing China and Tokugawa Japan in the 18th century, Sino-Japanese trade was maintained sustainably, either through Chinese traders in Nagasaki or European intermediaries; see Hao Peng, Trade Relations between Qing China and Tokugawa Japan, 1685-1859, Singapore, 2019. Government sponsored and private merchant ships bound for Japan were often dispatched from Nanjing, Ningbo, Taiwan, Xiamen, and Guangdong. Private operations run by family businesses required strong government connections and sound financial backing. Official records of the 18th century reveal that in 1693 the Suzhou silk agent Li Xu presented ten items of Japanese lacquer to the Court. In this way, Japanese lacquer could enter the Qing Court, where it was highly prized as demonstrated in its use to contain precious works of art.Compare the landscape of the present lot with the landscape on a black lacquer and gilt-decorated cabinet in the National Palace Museum, Taipei (acc.no.gu.qi07.00.000392), and also a black lacquer box and cover, also in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, (acc.no.guqi07.11.000376).See a related black lacquer panel with cinnabar lacquer frame, late Qing dynasty, which was sold at Christie's London, 9 December 1991, lot 61.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Such depictions on porcelain could relate to a specific scene in a novel or play, but it is difficult to attribute. The image on the present lot shows a woman carrying a boy on her back, her leg is high up, indicating she running or moving quickly, while looking back. It could therefore, relate to woodblock illustrations of the Lienu zhuan ('Biographies of Exemplary Women') and the story of 'The Virtuous Aunt'. The story recounts that when troops from the state of Qi entered Lu, they came upon a rural woman walking in the countryside, carrying her own son and leading her husband's elder brother's son by the hand. Fearing that she did not have the strength to rescue both children from the invaders, she flung her own son down, picked up her nephew and fled. Her son was captured by the Qi troops, and when they eventually reached her as well, the soldiers asked her why she had made the choice she did. She responded that her relationship to her son is private love, but her nephew is 'public duty':If I had turned my back on public duty and pursued private love, abandoning my brother's child to save my own child, even if by some good fortune I had escaped, still the Lord of Lu would not succour me, officials would not nourish me, and ordinary countrymen would have nothing to do with me. If I were to do this, then my body would nowhere be at ease, and my tired feet would have nowhere to step. Although it is painful to lose my son, what is the meaning of righteousness? Although I can bear to abandon my son and practice righteousness, I cannot bear to live in the state of Lu without righteousness. See Children in Chinese Art, Honolulu, 2002, p.99. The virtuous Aunt thus became a paragon of Confucian virtue for her dedication to public virtue over private love. In the early Kangxi period, when this dish was made, many would still remember the chaos and destruction from the Manchu invasion in 1644, and stories of invading soldiers and retreating women and children and issues of public service over private interests, would have tugged at the hearts of those living in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Stylistically, depictions of women on porcelain from this period appear to have been strongly influenced by Chen Hongshou (1598-1652). Chen painted his figures with relatively large heads with high chignon and thin graceful bodies. Chen was also extremely active within the printing industry, hence his designs often came to the attention of craftsmen who could copy them. See for example, the painting 'Flowers in His Hair' by Chen Hongshou, illustrated in Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting, New Haven and London, 1997, p.243.For a related example of a blue and white dish with a lady, Kangxi, see M.Butler, M.Medley and S.Little, Seventeenth-Century Chinese Porcelain from the Butler Family Collection, Alexandria, 1990, p.167, no.113; another related blue and white dish with a lady, Kangxi six-character mark and of the period, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Qing Shunzhi Kangxi Chao Qinghuaci, Beijing, 2005, p.123, no.61.
