JOSEPH WEST OF BATH (1800-1835)'Charlecombe Church near Bath, Somersetshire'signed 'J. West' (centre right), and inscribed as title and dated 1808 on the reversewatercolour,11 1/2 x 15 1/2 on (29.2 x 39.4cm) An inscription on a label on the reverse states 'a gift from Mr West to Miss A. Aspinall' The Anglican Church of St. Mary, Charlcombe was built in 12th century. In 1734 the novelist Henry Fielding married at the church. Joseph West is believed to have been a pupil of Thomas Barker of Bath. His landscapes mostly depict views in the vicinity of Bath, though he is known to have also visited Wales. He is possibly the same J. West who published a volume of instructional drawings of trees and cottages, done in soft ground etching. He exhibited four times at the British Institution.

ERA POSSIBLY MILITARY FLAT BLADE MACHETE, in a green canvas sheath, with belt attachment, no makers marks evident and a Eastern style Kukri style short sword, in black leather scabbard, with two mini knives build into scabbard, blade has hand etching/engraving and what appears to be an 'A' in a spade shape (playing card)

An 18th century mourning sword, hollow triangular section blade 32½”, with traces of etching to top 8”, blackened steel hilt with plain oval guard, shallow pas d’ane rings, slender facetted knucklebow and quillon, facetted ovoid pommel, swollen simulated wirebound grip, in its leather scabbard (lower half AF) with 2 rings. An 18th cent mourning sword, hollow triangular section blade 33”, with foliate etching to top 8”, plain darkened steel hilt with double shell guard, pas d’ane rings, knucklebow and quillon, ovoid pommel, simulated wirebound grip. Basically GC (blade some wear and dark rust patina, hilt loose).
