A sword, late 17th century slender single edged blade 32½" of thin wedge section, etched with Turks wielding scimitars, king's head (?), latin mottoes including "Carolus", birds and scrolls, with iron falchion type hilt, the crossguard and knucklebow in the form of swan necks terminating in swan's head, the grip embossed overall with foliage and scrolls, and with small spherical pommel. After Thomas Rowlandson RURAL SPORTS OR A CRICKET MATCH EXTRAORDINARY hand coloured etching published by Thomas Tegg circa 1811, mounted, framed & glazed, the image 23 by 34cm. The sub-title reads: "On Wednesday 3rd October 1811 a Singular Cricket Match took place at Balls Pond, Newington. The Players on both sides were 22 Women, 11 Hampshire against 11 Surrey. The Match was made between two Amateur Noblemen of the respective Counties for 500 guineas each." The first county match was held in 1811 between Surrey and Hampshire at Ball's Pond in Middlesex. Two noblemen underwrote the match with 1,000 guineas and its participants ranged in age from 14 to 60.  Please be aware all glass will be removed from framed and glazed items prior to posting and may result in delays to shipping your items. (This service is included in the cost of postage and packing). We can also totally remove all framing and mounts upon request to reduce shipping costs. Alternatively lots can be collected in person by prior appointment from NN8 1RT.
