AFTER JEAN LAMOUR (1698-1771) Designs for the gilded ironwork around the Neptune fountain, Place Stanislas, Nancy, France, etching and engraved by Dominique Collin (1725-1781) 38" x 70.5". Inscribed, "Dessein de grandes Grilles posees sur La PLace Royale de Nancy en 1755 par ordre de S.M. Le Roy de Pologne, and Collin Regis Sculptor". Jean Lamour carried out commissions for King Stanislas of Poland- the father-in-law of Louis XV, during the 1750's. King Stanislas (1677-1766) had abdicated as King of Poland but retained the title of King whilst ruling Lorraine as the Duke of Lorraine. The ironwork in Place Stanislas- the former Place Royale at Nancy (1751-1759) is a fine masterpiece and one of his most elevated triumphs of the blacksmith's art. The Cooper-Hewitt museum, New York has another version of this print (ref. 1921-6-210-3); this was exhibited in the 2008 exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt, 'Rococo: The Continuing Curve, 1730-2008'.
