Cazenave (Fréderic) L'Optique, or "The Optical Viewer", after Louis Léopold Boilly, etching and engraving with stipple, a good early impression with little wear to the plate, sheet 535 x 435 mm (21 x 17 in), under glass, presumably trimmed to image without lettered margin, minor surface dirt, framed, [circa 1794]; together with an original Zograscope, a device for looking at Vues d'Optique, wood, glass, reflective mirror, the spindle broken, [late 18th or early 19th century] (2) *** The Zograscope, as shown in the engraving after Boilly's painting of Louise Gély, is an optical viewer for prints, where the print is laid flat on the table and reflected in an angled mirror and observed through a vertical lens.
India.- Daniell (Thomas) Part of the City of Patna, on the River Ganges, from Oriental Scenery, etching and aquatint with full hand-colouring, an excellent impression on thick Whatman wove paper with watermark date of '1794', platemark 490 x 650 mm (19 1/4 x 25 5/8 in), sheet 510 x 650 mm (20 x 27 in), handling crease and split to lower left corner, small marginal loss to upper left corner, minor surface dirt and some browning, a few small spots, unframed, [Abbey 420, no. 21], published by the artist, 1795Literature:Archer, Mildred, Early Views of India, The Picturesque Journeys of Thomas and William Daniell 1786-1794, 1980, no. 21*** [Daniell's diary] 8 November 1788. 'The large and populous City of Patna is in the province of Bahar. The gauts, or steps leading up from the river, are very numerous here, and are intended for the advantage of merchandise, as well as the convenience of merchandise, as well as the convenience of the Hindoos, whose religious duties oblige them frequently to perform ablutions in the sacred river Ganges' [Archer, op. cit.]
