Hentie van der Merwe (South African 1972 - ) UNTITLED I MESSENGERsigned, dated 2008 and numbered 2/20 in penciletching and lithographsheet size: 37 by 28cmPROVENANCEWarren Editions, Cape Town, 2012Hentie van der Merwe explores themes of power and vulnerability, clearly represented by the masked hare in 'Untitled I Messenger' (Lot 292). Zhané Warren approached Van der Merwe with the intention of creating a series of prints, comprised of ideas from his musical theatre project. The 'Messenger' characters in his prints are inspired from the 'World of Nama' in Khoi folklore, which details the stories of personified African animals. 'Untitled I Messenger' is one edition of 20 prints and consists of a combination of etching techniques: aquatint, open bite, dry point and soft ground on paper. The artist's use of various printmaking techniques is to enhance the striking qualities of the 'Messengers' mask. Revealing and concealment are prominently seen in Van der Merwe's print 'Insatiable' (Lot 286). 'Insatiable' is defined as having spiritual or physical desires to the extent of never being completely satisfied. The letters of 'Insatiable' are camouflaged in variations of green, disguising and hiding the words in the silkscreen. The positioning and layering of the colours on the silkscreen act as clues for the viewer to identify and recognise the formation of the lettering. - E.K.Hentie van der Merwe, Hentie van der Merwe Biography, Accessed May 11 2021, http://www.hentievandermerwe.co.za/biography/Warren Editions, Hentie van der Merwe, Accessed May 11 2021, http://www.warreneditions.com/hentie-van-der-merwe/
