Art and Artists archive of autograph letters of the 18th c cartographer and artist John Lambert discussing a variety of his works, including a view of Durham Abbey with Bridge which he intends to have made into a print – with indication of local subscribers – and describing in great detail his methods of producing his works : ‘...the border part is coarse and strong purposely done so in order to strike the eye at a great distance in the nature of an etching and this drawing has one peculiar quality that is the more it is sullied by hanging (unless totally blackened) the more like a print it will appear which I had in contemplation which I did it is having already been washed with a composition to darken it...’ ‘...I am now possessed of a very exact sketch of Durham Cathedral with all the intended alterations now going forward which I obtained from authentic papers and a very elegant figure it will make when finished but what will be at a future period that you or I may perhaps never live to see (about 20 years is computed to finish it) Therefore as it is the greatest object of the Dean and Chapter let me know if a drawing of it would be agreeable...’ A fine correspondence which complements the correspondence of Lambert sold in these rooms in our sale in June 2008.
