Original vintage propaganda poster - The Palestinian. Published by the friends of Jerusalem. Aref El Rayess (or Aref Rayess) (1928 in Aley, Lebanon – 2005) was a Lebanese painter. Born in Aley (1928), Mount Lebanon, Aref El Rayess started his career as a self-taught artist exhibiting for the first time in 1948. He lived in Africa for many years during which he traveled between Senegal and Paris. In Paris, he joined the studios of Fernand Léger, André Lhote, Marcelle Marso and Ossip Zadkine while studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1957, he returned to Lebanon, but left again for Florence in 1959 with a scholarship from the Italian government. From 1960 to 1963, he lived in Rome where he went on studying and exhibiting. In 1963, he returned to Lebanon. Aref El Rayess was a prolific artist, mainly known as a painter, he also practiced etching, sculpture and tapestry. One of his tapestries, The Signs of Cadmus, is part of the collection of the Unesco Palace in Paris. Good condition, light creasing, staining. German-Made Dress Sword Probably for Siam c.1900, curved single edge blade cut with 2 fullers with traces of etching, nickel hilt with an elephant in relief on the guard surrounded by foliage, curtains beneath helmet, wire bound fish skin covered grip (worn), folding side-guard, in its nickel plated scabbard. Blade 74cms, overall 88cms. Good condition, blade re-plated and worn.
French Infantry Man’s Hanger Briquette, leaf-shaped blade etched Manufre de Klingenthal (pitted both sides obscuring etching), cast brass cruciform hilt stamped 1376, in its brass mounted leather scabbard with locket stamped 1376. Blade 48cms, overall 63cms. Good condition with some age wear overall.
Wilfred C Appleby (British, 1889-1954), Edinburgh University, signed and titled in pencil 'Wlfred C Appleby' (in lower margin), etching, 31 x 19cm, together with two other etchings by the same hand of George Watson's Boys College and Daniel Stewart's College, and another etching of a coastal landscape by Malcolm Paterson, (4). Anglo-French satire.- Gillray (James, 1756-1815) The Hand-Writing upon the Wall, an invasion print, with Napoleon presiding over a feast with dishes moulded to represent English buildings, etching with hand-colouring on wove paper without watermark, platemark 250 x 360 mm. (9 3/4 x 14 1/4 in), sheet 265 x 380 mm. (10 1/2 x 15 in), contemporary ink inscription in lower margin identifying 'Buonaparte' and 'The Empress Josephine', small tear in lower left corner but not into image, another small repaired tear in the upper centre, just going into the image, with the whole upper edge affixed onto paper support, otherwise some surface dirt, unframed, published by Hannah Humphrey, 1803.Literature:BM Satires 10072

Vive le diable', an engraved copy after 'The Plumb-pudding in danger...', and 'Proposition de constitution aux habitants de l'île St Hélène par l'ex empereur et roi' by Louis, etchings and engravings with hand-colouring, various sizes, framed and glazed, [early 19th century] (4).
