Michael Ayrton (1921-1975) Still life with flowers in a vase, the ace of diamonds and two dice on a table oil on canvas 43 by 34 cm Provenance: Tom Livesey and then by descent to his widow. This work was gifted by Michael Ayrton to his friend Tom Livesey; the present owner (Tom Livesey's widow) believes their friendship was forged in wartime (they both served in the RAF, Ayrton only briefly). Some correspondence remains between them such as an invitation to a 1951 exhibition at the Redfern Gallery which is inscribed on the reverse by Michael Ayrton, 'What has become of you? It must be two or three years since we met, yours ever M.A' Lot 418, Au Cirque, signed etching by Michael Ayrton, is from the same estate.

Pilkington Glass interest - Sigmund Pollitzer (1913-1982) 'Adonis' watercolour, signed and dated 1934 in pencil, inscribed, unframed 5 x 7in. (12.7 x 17.8cm.); together with four other watercolours, a pencil drawing, a signed etching and a woodcut, all of similar size, contained in the covers of a small sketch book with gilt initials 'E.J.'. -8 * To be sold on behalf of Willowbrook Hospice, Prescot. Donated as part of a sketchbook to the hospice by a resident, Miss Ellaline Jennings, whose father, Victor Jennings, ran the 'Brilliant Glass and Mirror' department at Pilkingtons in St Helens, Lancashire. The book included sketches by a number of Pilkingtons glass artists, including the chief designer, Sigmund Pollitzer, as well as A. C. Head, John Clitheroe, H. Burrows, J. W. Burnett and Walter Pierce. Two other sketches by Reginald Hector Whistler from the book are included in this sale as lot no. 159
James Gillray (1756 - 1815), etching, engraving and aquatint - The Apothesis of Hocht, published January 11th 1798 by H Humprey (BM 9156), image 50cm x 39cm CONDITION REPORT Modern glazed frame, not examined out of the frame, mounted close to image and assumption is that trimmed close to margins, larger margin at foot notable loss at title 'Hocht', creases particularly at the corners, repaired spidering tear lower left corner, top left corner print is slightly crushed up to mount and some associated slight tears
James Gillray (1756 - 1815), hand-coloured etching, aquatint engraving - Light expelling darkness, Evaporation of Stygian Exhaultations - or - The Sun of Constitution, rising superior to the clouds of opposition, published April 30th 1795 by H. Humphrey (BM 8644), image 34cm x 48cm CONDITION REPORT Very little margin left beyond the image. Trimmed close to but just beyond plate mark, stuck down, some creases and slight deterioration particularly towards outer edge, some discolouration particularly towards outer edge, colours are good. No tears

Humphrey (BM 10719), 40cm x 26cm CONDITION REPORT Glazed frame, not examined out of frame, appears to be trimmed beyond plate marks, some deterioration to lower right corner, also upper right corner. Significant loss to upper left corner, discolouration perhaps associated with an earlier framing to right hand edge, colours overall good

General deterioration to outer edges including several tears into image, particularly lower left of centre, lower right corner and elsewhere, colours muted, some time staining
