Malcolm Osborne (1880-1963), PORTRAIT OF A BEARDED MAN Signed and dated '03 in pencil l.r. 29 x 22cm PORTRAIT OF CHRISTINA OF DENMARK (after Holbein), Signed and dated '04 in pencil l.r. 22 x 10cm CONTINENTAL STREET WITH MOUNTAIN BEYOND Signed and dated '05 in pencil l.r. 23 x 16cm Three drypoint etchings; and another etching of 'OLD GRAMMAR HALL, OXFORD' Sold together with four letters from the artist relating to the etchings. Osborne's natural genius as a printmaker was clear from the very outset of his pupillage under Sir Frank Short. He was to become a printmaker of quite outstanding technical ability, being elected an Associate Engraver of the Royal Academy on the strength of his printmaking alone. Osborne went on to succeed Sir Frank Short first as head of the Engraving School at the Royal College of Art (in 1924) and later as President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (in 1939) (4)

*Claude Francis Barry (1883-1970), 'THE CHATEAU GAILLARD' Etching and aquatint, signed and inscribed with the title in pencil 55 x 58cm Exhibited: United Society of Artists, Paris Salon, 1952. Barry studied art at St Ives and Newlyn in Cornwall with Stanhope Forbes between 1940 and 1945, and he was also a pupil of Sir Alfred East and Sir Frank Brangwyn. He lived at Val Plaisant in Jersey from 1945 until his death in 1970. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
