William Blake (1757-1827) engraver after John Flaxman (1755-1826), stipple engraving and etching on paper, Echidna The Untameable of Soul, from Compositions from the Works, Days and Theogony of Hesiod, published byLongman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown 1817, 13cm x 28cm, mounted, glazed and framed. Flaxman, a close friend of Blake, was the much more successful artist at thetime and used his name to help the struggling Blake with engraving commissions. According to The William Blake Archive, the Hesiod etchings “are one of Blake’smajor endeavours as a commercial etcher/engraver of designs by other artists … Without the Hesiod project, Blake and his wife Catherine might have descended intodire poverty."

Satirical Broadside.- La Rareté de Prague - De Praagsche Rariekiek, engraved titles in French and Dutch, central fold, tears in top right corner and lower left corner without loss, browned, 550 x 425mm., [BM Satires Catalogue 2504], Amsterdam, by Jan 'T Lam, Boekverkooper bezuyden 't Stadhuys, naer de Copy van London, Publish'd According to Act of Parliament, by T. Cooper, at the Globe in Pater-Noster-Row, [c. 1745].⁂ A Dutch broadside after an English broadside published by Cooper, satirising Cardinal Fleury (1653-1743), chief minister of Louis XV of France and other European heads of states and politicians prior to their march against Prague. The etching showing the interior of a room, at its centre a table with a map of Europe, surrounded by various heads of state and politicians pointing at certain areas. In mid-1741 France, Spain, Bavaria and Prussia forged an alliance, in which they promised each other support in exchange to the rights of certain territories conquered from the Austrian forces. In the same year the allied forces marched against Prague, which was stormed by the French in November 1741.

Nora Scholly (Slovakian / Austrian, 1905-1965), Fairy, small scale hand coloured etching, signed Nora Scholly to lower right. Scholly wrote a total of 16 Children’s books between 1930 to the 1960’s which she illustrated herself. In her books she often gave animals, trees and flowers a human face. In this way, Scholly tried to bring the unity of humanity and nature closer to children. Framed and glazed, ‘Scholly Verlag Badischl’ label to reverse. 8cm x 11cm.
