Bernard Leach (1887-1979), studio pottery jug, circa 1940's, impressed studio marks, height 20cm, as illustrated in the St. Ives Artists' Book by Michael Bird. Notes: Bernard Leach was born in Hong Kong in 1887. Leach attended the Slade School of Fine Art and the London School of Art where he studied etching under Frank Brangwyn. He was a major influence on the leading New Zealand potter, Len Castle, who travelled to London to spend time working with him in the mid-1950's. His work is very popular in Australia.
Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938), etching, Riverside Buildings, Peshwar, India, signed in pencil, plate size 17cm x 27cm, framed. Notes: Mortimer Menpes was born in South Australia in 1855. He studied at the Adelaide (Australia) School of Design and then in 1878 at the London School of Art. He travelled widely and held more one-man exhibitions in London than any other painter of the day.
