A Cycloidotrope Magic Lantern Slide, lacquered brass rack and pinion mechanism with hand crank and drawing needle for etching geometric patterns in applied carbon black, on metal base with wooden side panels, 11 x 4.5in, 3 in diameter screen holder and a set on nine glass disks in metal case. rack and pinion mechanism running smoothly, some marks and loss of lacquer to brass, metal springs which hold smoked glass in place suffer from some surface corrosion, no signs of damage to mechanism, wooden panels or base plate. Glass disk in cycloidotrope - some chipping and damage to edge, disks in metal fitted case - all appear in good condition, some have applied coloured paint
HARDY THOMAS: (1840-1928) English Novelist. An original 6 x 9 etching by William Strang of Thomas Hardy, showing the subject in a head and shoulders pose, 'signed' W. Strang in the ground, and additionally signed ('Thomas Hardy') by Hardy in pencil with his name alone immediately beneath the image. Further signed and inscribed, by both Elkin Mathews and John Lane individually, 'Lionel Johnson from Elkin Mathews and John Lane, in pencil to the lower edge. Matted in cream and framed and glazed in a gold coloured frame to an overall size of 11 x 14. An interesting association piece. VG William Strang (1859-1921) Scottish Painter and Engraver. Charles Elkin Mathews (1851-1921) and John Lane (1854-1925) formed a partnership in the late 1880's to sell and publish books. Lionel Johnson (1867-1902) published three books, one of which was 'The Art of Thomas Hardy' (1894).

Some foxing to odd pages, odd faults generally good condition

A Minton porcelain shaped oval presentation dish, decorated in sepia with a vignette of two oxen, inscribed verso Etching on Porcelain after Karl Du Jardin, finished for & presented to Thomas Baring Esq. MP. and October 1868, within a `jewelled` and gilt band border, 31cm in length, GWJ monogram, Minton impressed marks. Thomas Baring, (1799-1873) was a partner of Barings Bank from 1828 until his death. He inherited Norman Court in Hampshire and was the Tory Member for Great Yarmouth (1835-7) and Huntingdon (1844-73). He was in addition Chairman of Lloyd`s, a Director of the Bank of England and a Commissioner for the Great Exhibition of 1851. It is speculation, but the monogram is in the style and form of that of George Jones who often bought Minton and Wedgwood ceramics among others for retail both here and abroad.
