WWI – Marshal Joffre Memoires du Marechal Joffre Paris 1932 first edition one of 75 copies produced on Japon paper 2 vols half morocco marbled boards fine condition. Containing a number of tipped in items including an autograph letter signed by Joffre dated December 13th 1915 to Mon cher Hugnet discussing the changes in command of the British forces. This was shortly after the resignation of Sir John French and his replacement by Douglas Haig. Also tipped in is an original etching signed by the artist (2 of 15) showing two French soldiers in a trench; a ms letter on military matters to Joffre dated 1909; a fine letter identified as having been written to General Petain and dated August 1915 discussing the situation of the war almost certainly judging from the date at the height of Verdun; an original photograph showing a high ranking French officer and man in the trenches; a letter identified as having been sent to General Bonnal dated May 12th 1916; an autograph letter signed of Field Marshal Sir John French dated January 8th 1915 thanking the Central Committee of France and Belgium for the award to him of a medal; a typewritten letter signed by Joffre dated 1921 and an autograph letter signed by General de Castelnau dated 1920.

A painted miniature c 1850, of John Searle, RN (1788 - 1852), head and shoulders, wearing Naval General Service medal with clasp, black lacquered frame, 6¾” x 5½” with gilt inner, GC; together wtih his 1805 pattern sword, straight fullered blade 28”, with traces of etching, regulation brass stirrup hilt, the langets engraved with fouled anchor, plain pommel and grooved backstrap, wirerbound fishskin grip, in its brass mounted leather scabbard, QGC; with vendor’s note showing family descent of picture and sword. Note: This item requires further research; it is sold with a family tree. A John Searle commanded HMS Victory from 28th January 1808 to 22nd March 1808 and 20th November 1808 to 3rd February 1809
A 1796 pattern infantry officer’s sword, straight shallow fullered blade 32”, with traces of etching, copper gilt hilt with double shell guard, the inner turning down (spring AF), knucklebow, urn shaped pommel, simulated copper wirebound grip. Basically GC for age, the hilt retaining a little gilt (blade worn and cleaned over pitting)
