David Waterson RE FSA (1870-1954) Three narrative drypoint views of Invermark Castle on the shore of Loch Lee near Brechin, one engraved within the plate 'Loch Lee' and one entitled to the margin 'Invermark', each framed and mounted under glass, 23 x 30 cm, 18 x 22 cm and 11 x 14 cm David Waterson was born in Brechin in 1870 and after training at the Edinburgh College of Art he returned to spend his adult life painting, etching, drawing and engraving his native landscape. Despite his desire to remain in his home town, Waterson was well-known in his day, with a ready market for his work. He had exhibitions in Dresden in 1906, Brechin in 1911 and the Montrose Museum in 1910 and 1929, as well as exhibitions at the Walker Art Galleries in Liverpool and the Royal Scottish Academy. Indeed Sir Seymour Haden, the President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers considered his art to be 'genius', and the King of Sweden was an admirer and patron of his work.
