The hilt of the regulation pattern incorporating a strung bugle device. Scabbard absent. The sword has been professionally restored showing some service pitting. etching faint to parts.

Royal Navy Sword of Commander R.G. Liveing Comprising: Royal Navy George V period Levee pattern sword, a scarce narrow blade example of the regulation pattern. The blade with etched decoration of a GVR crowned cypher and to the forte the retailers details of Gieves. The hilt with shagreen grip, surmounted by a lionhead pommel. The folding locking guard with engraved name R.G.LIVEING RN. Complete with scabbard. Small rust spots to the blade, otherwise etching clear and clean. The leather is dry and with a part break. ... Commander Robert George Liveing entered Royal Navy service in January 1919 and was appointed a Sub Lieutenant 1926 with Lieutenant 1929. He served with the Submarine Service and in 1928 was posted to the Submarine L3 on the China Station. He transferred to the Emergency list in 1931 and was recalled for service during WW2. The Royal Navy list of 1968 shows him as the Senior Command Naval Auxiliary Officer Royal Naval Auxiliary Service.

Over a period of three months between December 1998 and March 1999, Heron worked in his studio with the printer Hugh Stoneman, making drawings for fifteen works in total, from which he selected the eleven plates that make up the portfolio. He finished the drawing for the colophon page on the morning of the day he died. Heron approved the proofs and decided on a sequence for presenting the works shortly before his death. The etchings were printed posthumously, overseen by the artist’s two daughters.' The Tate
