WALTER GREAVES (1846-1930) COAL BARGES UNLOADING signed & dated in plate W. Greaves 1872 etching Image 13.7 x 20.0cm / 5 3/4 x 7 3/4in Barges on the Thames were a favourite subject of Greaves, who had originally trained as a shipwright and boatsman. A pupil and associate of Whistler's for a number of years, Greaves fell out of favour with the master in the late 1870's. The present work is clearly indebted to Whistler, both in its subject and composition. A different impression is with the Art Institute of Chicago (Ref. 2004.885).

CHARLES EDWARD HOLLOWAY, R.I., N.E.A.C. (1838-1897) THE ADAM AND EVE, OLD CHELSEA initialled & dated in plate l.r. C.E.H. 91 etching Image 19.5 x 11.8cm / 7 3/4 x 4 3/4in Holloway was a friend and associate of James McNeill Whistler, who had etched this same subject in 1879. Whistler is thought to have been working from photographs, including one by James Hedderley taken c.1865. The scene was also painted by another in Whistler's circle, Walter Greaves, and etched by Edwin Edwards in 1871. Holloway's view is unusual for its inclusion of a sign for the Neleus Boat Club's clubhouse, which is dated 1850. This suggests that Holloway had access either to a different photograph or perhaps alternatively was asked to include the clubhouse by a member of that Rowing Club.
