§ Richard Drew, known as Zacron (British, 1943-2012) Led Zeppelin III - The Rock Album Cover No. 50 from an edition of 500 lithograph 68 x 68cm (27 x 27in) Exhibited: Zacron Collection Cat. No 739 Edition No 50 Other Notes: Zacron (1943-2012) RA, was a multimedia artist, poet, writer and broadcaster. He was a founder member of the Psychedelic Movement of the late 1960s and founder of "The New Visionaries" school of 1978. Zacron designed the artwork for the third album cover for Led Zepplin in 1970. The work is based upon an earlier trompe l'oeil and collage piece, "A Window on London", which had been bought by Jimmy Page. The design for the album cover is of fragmentary 'scrap-book' images which relegates photographs of the four group members to the back. The sleeve's design features a rotating card disc. When this disc is turned by hand, a variety of motifs and portraits of the four group members become visible through the die-cut circles of the sleeve front, allowing viewers to 'dial-up' icons representing the interests of the group. The concept originated from a rotating book which Zacron produced whilst studying at the Royal Academy Schools in 1965. The album sleeve and lithograph are part of the Victoria and Albert museum collection.
