An early 19th century officer’s sword of The 52nd (Oxfordshire Light Infantry) Regiment, curved flat blade 31½”, etched in plain panels on one side with crowned Royal Arms, supporters and motto, and on the other side with crown, strung bugle, “LII” and wreath (etching faint), gilt stirrup hilt with ornamental langets bearing strung bugle, crossguard, facetted knucklebow, flattened lion’s head pommel into backstrap facetted at the lower end, wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel flattened diamond section scabbard (minor dents) with 2 rings on crosslet mounts. Good Condition, the hilt retaining approximately 50% original gilt. Plate 43

A 1796 pattern heavy cavalry officer’s undress sword with special pattern hilt, broad straight shallow fullered blade 35”, with hatchet point, marked J.J. Runkel, Sohlingen on backstrap, and etched on both sides with crowned GR cypher and trophies of instruments and weapons, steel semi basket ladder pattern guard, heavy facetted pommel and backstrap, 2” deep shaped wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel scabbard (3 dents) with 2 rings. Good Condition, with a little gilt to etching. Plate 42 £400-600

An early 17th century gorget, probably German, shield shaped with roped edges and similar borders decorated with staggered rows of domed brass rivets, the neck with single row of larger rivets, etched overall with heraldic shield surmounted by a crest in the form of a barred helmet, and with two storks for supporters, the whole surrounded by scrolled foliage on a beaded background. Good Condition (the etching slightly worn commensurate with age). Plate 47

1835 Etching of Field Marshall Sir John Fox Burgoyne, Military Engineer Field Marshal Sir John Fox Burgoyne, 1st Baronet GCB (24 July 1782 – 7 October 1871) was a British Army officer. After taking part in the Siege of Malta during the French Revolutionary Wars, he saw action under Sir John Moore and then under the Duke of Wellington in numerous battles of the Peninsular War. He served under Sir Edward Pakenham as chief engineer during the War of 1812. He went on to act as official advisor to Lord Raglan during the Crimean War.
