St Gabriel's was a Church of England teacher training college, founded in 1899 and closed in 1978. Its Art Department attracted talented teachers and artists whose vocation was to inspire young teachers through studying and imitating the work of great artists. The paintings and drawings in this collection were collected by the College's staff through donations and purchases during the interwar and post-war periods. After the College's closure, the collection was transferred to the ownership of an educational trust and until recently loaned to Goldsmith's University of London.

[SM].Ernst Wilhelm Nay studiert von 1925-28 an der Berliner Hochschule für Bildende Künste bei Karl Hofer. In der Auseinandersetzung mit Ernst Ludwig Kirchner und Henri Matisse, aber auch mit Caspar David Friedrich und Nicolas Poussin vollzieht sich seine erste Orientierung; seine Stillleben, Porträts und Landschaften finden große Anerkennung. 1931 erhält Nay ein neunmonatiges Stipendium für die Villa Massimo in Rom, wo seine surrealistisch-abstrakten Bilder entstehen. Durch Vermittlung des Lübecker Museumsdirektors C.G. Heise erhält Nay ein von Edvard Munch finanziertes Arbeitsstipendium, das ihm 1937 einen Aufenthalt in Norwegen und auf den Lofoten ermöglicht. In den dort entstandenen `Fischer- und Lofotenbildern` erreicht sein Schaffen einen ersten Höhepunkt. Im gleichen Jahr werden in der Ausstellung `Entartete Kunst` zwei seiner Werke gezeigt und Nay mit Ausstellungsverbot belegt. 1940 zum Kriegsdienst einberufen, kommt Nay als Infanterist nach Frankreich, wo ihm ein französischer Bildhauer sein Atelier zur Verfügung stellt. Die künstlerische Verarbeitung der Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeit vollzieht sich 1945-48 in den `Hekatebildern`, in denen Motive aus Mythos, Legende und Dichtung anklingen. In den `Fugalen Bildern` aus den Jahren 1949-51 kündigt sich in den glühenden Farben und verschlungenen Formen ein Neubeginn an. 1950 zeigt die Kestner-Gesellschaft Hannover Nays erste Retrospektive. Ein Jahr später übersiedelt der Künstler nach Köln. Hier vollzieht Nay den endgültigen Schritt zur völlig ungegenständlichen Malerei in seinen `Rhythmischen Bildern`, in denen er die Farbe als reinen Gestaltwert einzusetzen beginnt. Seit 1955 entstehen Nay`s `Scheibenbilder`, in denen runde Farbflächen subtile Raum- und Farbmodulationen im Bild organisieren. Diese finden 1963/64 ihre Weiterentwicklung in den sog. `Augenbildern`. Mit der ersten amerikanischen Einzelausstellung in den Kleeman Galleries, New York 1955, seinem Beitrag für die Biennale in Venedig 1956 sowie seiner Beteiligung an der documenta in Kassel (1955, 1959 und 1964) vollzieht sich sein internationaler Durchbruch.
