HEALTH RESTORED Phoenix rising from flames Edge: reededSamuel Phillips Eady was a quack doctor in early 19th-century London. ‘Dr’ Eady lived at 38 Dean Street, Soho, from ca 1820 until 1825. He was quite (in)famous. In 1824 George Cruikshank made an etching lampooning him.Among other things that Eady alleged that he could cure was syphilis, and although he must have earned money, the disease frequently abates for a number of years before resuming its inexorable course. There he met and married Gill’s favourite model Daisy Hawkins. After the War, the relocated to Ditchling where Holloway became a letterer and graphic designer. He returned to painting and etching in 1969 after revisiting Capel-y-ffin. This view of the sun setting behind Llanthony Tertia has been described as one of Holloway’s most ‘visionary’ works. He made an etching after this watercolour.
