Christmas card c1916 and some WWII documentation. A small collection of diverse documents, the first being a Christmas Card from RN Air Station Flanders (implying it was produced for all five RNAS Stations in Northern France), with an illustration by the artist René Bull. In the centre of the front cover is an early representation of what later became the RAF Eagle. Above the eagle are the letters R.N.A.S and below “Flanders”. Inside the front cover are the traditional greetings, and opposite is an etching. The etching shows a RNAS Blimp, the pilot having a Christmas Picnic atop the envelope, reaching up to touch glasses with a fellow aviator, hanging by a rope ladder below a bi-plane. The biplane has a registration of 1916, while above, in the distance another bi-plane is marked 1917. The artists mark is at bottom right, “René Bull”. Also in this pack are some documents belonging to Flying Officer Wheatley, relating to his initial training in 1940, and later service in India over VJ Day [1] “They Made me an Airman” 1940, a booklet produced for each RAF recruiting intake, with course photos. [2] Menu for VJ Day Celebrations at No 3 Hill Depot, India. [3] 4 Maps. 3 produced by the Survey of India offices (Imphal, Shillong and Assam and Bengal. One by Survey HQ 14th Army showing MT Routes for the Fourteenth Army (SEA/E/MISC.8101). All stained and marked, QGC.

A 1796 pattern infantry officer’s sword, blade 32½”, with traces of gilt etching, gilt hilt with shell guard (turn down half missing), knucklebow (bent) and quillon, urn pommel, simulated wirebound grip. Hilt retains approx 60% gilt, otherwise QGC

An 1821 pattern R Artillery officer’s sword, almost straight, fullered blade 35”, by Army & Navy Cooperative Society, 105 Victoria St, London SW, with traces of etching in panels, regulation plated triple bar hilt with plain pommel, chequered backstrap and wirebound fishskin grip, leather knot, in its leather FS scabbard with frog strap. Basically GC (blade lightly pitted overall, obscuring etching, a little bubbling to hilt plating).

A continental cavalry officer’s sword c 1830, curved fullered blade 32½”, etched with bold foliate panels on both sides (traces of earlier etching on one side), steel stirrup hilt with langet (one broken) pronounced knucklebow, plain pommel and backstrap, ribbed leather grip (AF). Basically GC, the blade retaining some original polish.

A 19th century German courtsword, hollow triangular section blade 27” (point broken), with traces of etching, gilt brass hilt, decorated overall with stylized floral and foliate panels, the turn down shell guard bearing crowned “L” cypher (Ludwig of Bavaria?) within wreath, turn down crossguard, knucklebow into elaborate pommel with small lion’s heads fore and aft and classical warriors heads each side, swollen grip with fluted MOP panel to front (back panel missing), GC, retaining approx 80% original gilt (few tiny holes to shellguard) Plate 9
