In his day Hudson (British, 1701-1779) was the leading portrait painter in London. He counted Joshua Reynolds among his students. Nathaniel Hone RA, London (Lugt 2793). Hone (Irish, 1718-1784) was a portraitist and miniature painter and a founding member of the Royal Academy. The Manning Galleries Ltd, LondonEdgar Seaton Hyde, Cheshire (acquired from the above in the 1960s)Thence by descent In the present work Apollo rides through the sky silhouetted against the sun opposite his twin sister Artemis, her head profiled against the moon and in the company of a group of chaste nymphs. Sagittarius in the form of a centaur is to Apollo's right. The subject derives from the top section of the etching by Pietro Testa (1611-1650), of the Allegory of Autumn. Not shown in the present work, but present in the lower part of Testa's etching, a drunken Silenus with the god Pan leads a lustful parade of satyrs and centaurs to honour the return of Bacchus from his travels through India. The sheet is taped along the top edge. There is some slight fading to the sheet consistent with age. There is an old repaired tear to the upper left hand corner. There are some small spots of light foxing. Both the repaired loss and foxing are visible in the calalogue illustration. There is a small piece of tape to each lower corner consistent with the sheet being previously stuck down along the lower edge. There is some slight buckling to the right and left edges of the sheet. The work would benefit from remounting in a conservation mount. Otherwise, the sheet is in good overall condition for a work of its age.

Dimensions: Overall size: 14 13/16 x 11 3/8 in. (376 x 289 mm). Image size: 6 3/4 x 4 5/16 in. (171 x 110 mm).Pricing: Starting Price: $300 Reserve Price: N.A. Auction Sale Price Estimate: $400/500Lot Note(s): Cream wove paper. Full margins. Very good impression. Fine condition. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Delteil 23; Stella 23. Comment(s): During the second half of the nineteenth century, France was experiencing a printmaking renaissance. Despite this artistic trend, Impressionists were not quick to adopt the medium as they were accustomed to painting in plein air. However, Renoir learned the medium, creating his first etching in 1890 and his first lithograph two years later. During this time, Renoir was 49 and already an established painter. Yet, he executed a total of 59 prints in his lifetime, producing almost equal amounts of lithographs and etchings. Impressively, he was able to develop his own style of etching independent of his development as a painter [courtesy Masterworks Fine Art]. [2646-3-300-NA]
Artist: Steve Wheeler (American, 1912 - 1992). Title: "The Sailor and His Women". Medium: Three color wookcut. Date: Composed c1950. Dimensions: Overall size: 15 1/16 x 10 5/8 in. (383 x 270 mm).Pricing: Starting Price: $1,600 Reserve Price: N.A. Auction Sale Price Estimate: $2,000/2,500Lot Note(s): Signed "Wheeler" in pencil, lower right. Edition size unknown (perhaps never editioned, with only a few proofs pulled). Handmade cream paper. Ample margins. Fine impression. Good to very good condition; the image is fine; creasing inherent in the paper lower margin; printed off-center. Comment(s): Wheeler’s prints in woodcut and etching are rare. ‘Gordon’s Print Prices’ lists only his silkscreens – not a single woodcut or etching. He is often spoken of as one of the least appreciated, but most deserving, of 20th Century American artists. The influence of Arshile Gorky on Wheeler’s oeuvre is often overlooked. His work is increasingly being "discovered," as evidenced by the sale of his painting "W22 (Man Looking at Pork Chop)" at Christie's New York, 05/21/2008, lot #8, at $109,000 (including premium). There has been recent increasing interest in his fine prints as well. Image copyright © The Estate of Steve Wheeler. [30112-3-1600-NA]
