Following the commissioning of engravings of the campaigns in Eastern Turkestan in Paris, a further seven military campaigns were recorded through copper engravings but were created within the Imperial workshops in Beijing. This is the second of sixteen engravings from the Jinchuan Campaign series depicting the conquest of Lamu and Rize. In contrast to the Turkestan Campaign suite, the present work is notable for being closer to woodblock prints in its aesthetic and its creation was a slow and laborious process requiring four craftsmen to work for two months to produce one engraving for this set.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
