W. pubs.), Northern Bears taught to Dance, July 14th. 1801, etching on laid, original hand colouring, some toning and spotting, one repaired closed tear, 260 x 365mm. The last item described shows Admiral Lord Nelson and Admiral Viscount Collingwood and a tough looking British sailor each controlling a chained and muzzled bear. Each bear wears a brass collar reading ‘Denmark’, ‘Sweeden’ and ‘Paulo’. (4)
* Gillray (James). The King of Brobdingnag and Gulliver, pub. H.Humphrey, June 26th. 1803, etching with aquatint on wove, bright original hand colouring, small margins, near contemp. ink manuscript annotation on verso, 315 x 255mm. George III holds a spy glass to his eye to examine a Lilliputian Napoleon whom he holds in the palm of his hand. The King pronounces that ‘...you be one of the most pernicious little odious reptiles ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the earth’. A wonderful example of Georgian jingoism and anti-French propoganda. (1)
* Gillray (James). The King of Brobdingnag and Gulliver (Plate 2d.) - Scene - ‘Gulliver manoeuvring with his little Boat in the Cistern’ - vide, Swift’s Gulliver, pub. H.Humphrey, Feb 10th. 1804, etching on wove with original hand colouring, occ. spotting and slight dust soiling, small stain to image, remnants of old backing card adhered to verso, 350 x 455mm (1)
* Heath (William, pseud. Paul Pry). The March of Intellect, pub. G.Humphrey, Jany. 23rd. 1828, etching on wove with original hand colouring, very slight spotting, occ. marginal repaired closed tears, 235 x 340mm. One of series of caricatures published betwenn 1825 and 1829.The series lampooned the political and social issues of the day. Here, fantastical modes of transport, gas lights, the Thames Tunnel and a proposed bridge across the English channel are all satirised. Workers are seen relaxing in the street with a butcher and a coalman playing chess, an apple seller is reading Byron and the coach driver is deeply engrossed in a copy of ‘The Times’. The implication is that if the working classes aquired knowledge through education they would then neglect their duties. (1)
