He was born in Inverness where his father, a former sailor, was harbour master, and he spent his childhood between Inverness and Skye. His art is rooted in his knowledge of the Highlands, the Highland people and their history and in his own early associations with sailors and the sea.

* PHILIP REEVES RSA PPRSW RGI RE, ACADEMY etching, signed in pencil and numbered 3/14 38cm x 76cm Mounted, framed and under glass Note: Philip Reeves studied at the Cheltenham School of Art and at the Royal College of Art, London before being appointed lecturer at Glasgow School of Art in 1954. In 1967 he founded the Edinburgh Printmakers, and was made Head of Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art in 1970, during which time he honed his skill, and expanded his media to include collage and construction. He has been extensively exhibited nationally with collections in the City Art Centre, the Royal Scottish Academy and the V&A Museum. His work can be found in many public and private collections in the UK.

Frank Archer RWS RE, British 1912-1995- "Job & his Friends"; etching, signed, titled and dated 1937 in pencil, 25x20cm, Provenance: with the Catto Gallery , London, according to label attached to the reverse, (may be subject to Droit de Suite) Frank Archer for an Art Teacher's Diploma at Brighton School of Art (1932), and then took up a place at the Royal College of Art (1934-38). The engravings that he produced as a student won him the coveted Prix de Rome (1938) and led to his election to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (ARE 1940, RE 1960). After the war, Archer taught at Eastbourne School of Art, and later at Kingston College of Art, eventually becoming its head. Though he continued to use some kinds of printmaking, his essential development was as a painter with a breadth of vision. The Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours elected him as a member (ARWS 1971, RWS 1976) and mounted a retrospective of his work at the Bankside Gallery (1990).

Intended to inspire patriotism amongst the British during the Napoleonic Wars, the drawing was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1800 (no.423) and is now in the British Museum. In 1801, Westall showed a further work with the same title (no.569), described as ` a print in imitation of a drawing`. ++ Image generally good; some wear at edges; approx. 5mm margins
