A porcelain coffee cup, late 18th century, probably Chinese porcelain but European decorated, painted in polychrome with a scene of a cockerel, hen, other birds and flowers, the cup with a distinctive wishbone handle, unmarked, 6.5cm high Footnote: We believe this cup to be a Chinese-made, European decorated replacement for a missing or broken piece from a Meissen or similar service. The scene of a cockerel with a hen and flowers, is based on a print originally by Francis Barlow (1626 - 1704), an influential English painter, etcher and illustrator. See included image taken from The Online Tate Gallery; 'After Francis Barlow, 'Cock; Hen; Chicken; Dove', date not known, engraving and etching on paper' for a similar design and inspiration of the theme.
An unusual Caughley tea bowl, circa 1790, printed in underglaze blue with the Travellers Print, featuring a secondary print of a mother, child and dog in a landscape, below an associated double line border, unmarked, 8cm diameter See CB&W, p.63 for a discussion of this pattern, where the author notes that this print was based upon an etching by Paul Sandby RA (1731-1809). That this print is slightly unclear may be down to the re-cutting of the engraved plate.
