William Lippincott (New York, 1849 - 1920) "An Idyl" oil on canvas painting. Signed lower right. With old labels verso. Housed in a gilt frame. Provenance: Important New York City private collection. Lippincott taught at the National Academy of Design and also attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He exhibited in the Paris Salons until 1882 and then returned to the United States where he set up a studio in New York City. He exhibited regularly for more than 40 years at the National Academy of Design, elected an associate member in 1884 and a full academician in 1897. In addition to the National Academy, Lippincott was a member of the New York Etching Club, Philadelphia Sketch Club, and American Watercolor Society. Sight Size: 10.5 x 14 in. After Judy Ball (contemporary) A set four floral studies, pencil signed, uniformly gilt-framed under glass, 36 cm x 20 cm [Judy Ball was born in Bosham, Chichister in 1940. Educated in Scotland, she trained as a florist at Constance Spry, London. When her children reached teen age she took up etching, selling her work at Covent Garden Market, this grew into the business Judy Ball Cards. Since retired, she now resides at Rye Harbour.]
An antique early 19th century named Naval Dirk / Dagger, believed to be US / American in origin. Having a brass pommel engraved with anchor decoration and the inscription ' USS Enterprise Sailing Master James Bassett 1813 '. A ribbed bone handle with a chain stretching from the pommel to the guard. Floral etching to the curved blade, housed within original leather scabbard. Measures approx 47cm.The USS Enterprise was the third US ship to be named Enterprise was a schooner, built by Henry Spencer at Baltimore, Maryland, in 1799. Her first commander thought that she was too lightly built and that her quarters, in particular, should be bulletproofed. Enterprise was overhauled and rebuilt several times, effectively changing from a twelve-gun schooner to a fourteen-gun topsail schooner and eventually to a brig. Enterprise saw action in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean again, capturing numerous prizes. She wrecked in July 1823.
