Los 123

Northern European School of the 18th century."Saint Cecilia".Etching on vellum illuminated by hand.Measurements: 19 x 15.5 cm; 23 x 18 cm.A beautiful and subtle border of flowers in the purest Baroque style holds the engraved image, and later illuminated by hand, of Saint Cecilia, the most popular of the Roman martyrs together with Saint Agnes. A young patrician from the Caecilian family, she was forced by her parents to marry, although in the bridal chamber she converted her husband to the ideal of Christian chastity. The young husband had himself and his brother baptised, and both were condemned to death. Because Cecilia refused to offer sacrifices to the gods, she was condemned to die by drowning in the steam of an overheated cauldron, but a heavenly dew cooled her. She was then ordered to be beheaded, but her executioner struck three blows without managing to separate her head from her body. As Roman law forbade further beating of the condemned after these three attempts, Cecilia survived for three days. She died in the presence of Pope Urban and was buried in the cemetery of Callixtus. Since the 15th century, Saint Cecilia has been the patron saint of musicians, singers and organists, as well as organ and string instrument makers. Originally, Saint Cecilia, like most martyrs, did not wear any identifying attribute. It was only at the end of the 15th century, when she became the patron saint of musicians, that she received a musical instrument, a portable or fixed organ, as an attribute.

Los 127

Northern European School of the 18th century."Saint Sebastian".Etching on vellum with hand-illuminated border.Slight damp stains.Measurements: 18,5 x 15 cm.A beautiful and subtle border of flowers in the purest baroque style frames an etching engraved composition. It is a scene starring Saint Sebastian. Born in Gaul and raised in Milan, Sebastian was a centurion of the first cohort in the time of Emperor Diocletian (late 3rd - early 4th century). Denounced because he exhorted his friends Mark and Marcellinus to remain steadfast in their faith, by order of the emperor he was tied to a post in the centre of the Field of Mars, and served as a live target for the archers who shot him. But he did not die for it. The widow Irene, who wanted to raise his body for burial, noticed that he was still breathing, bandaged his wounds and saved his life. After he was cured, he reappeared before Diocletian to reproach him for his cruelty towards the Christians. He was then scourged, beaten to death in the circus and his corpse was thrown into the Maximian sewer. Shortly afterwards, Saint Sebastian appeared to Saint Lucila in her sleep to reveal to her the location of his remains, and asked her to bury him in the catacombs.

Los 129

Northern European School of the 18th century."Saint Francis of Borgia".Etching on vellum with hand-illuminated border.Measurements: 17,5 x 14 cm.During his mandate as viceroy of Catalonia (1539-1543), Francisco de Borja strengthened the region against piracy, banditry and the French threat. On this occasion, the saint is shown praying and gazing at a pair of winged angels holding a chalice with the body of Christ. The scene is framed by a striking border of flowers in the purest Baroque style. Saint Francis Borgia (1510-1572), General of the Society of Jesus, Duke of Gandia and Marquis of Lombay, Grand Duke of Spain and Viceroy of Catalonia, was a descendant of the kings of Navarre and the Crown of Aragon, great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI and great-great-nephew of Pope Callixtus III. He was canonised in 1671 by Pope Clement X. His figure began to be depicted in art very early on, almost shortly after his death. His most distinctive iconographic elements are the skull (sometimes crowned), a reminder of his horror and the reason for his change of life when he discovered the decomposition of the Empress Isabella of Portugal on his way to deliver her body in Granada; the ducal crowns on the ground, a sign of his renunciation of all earthly things; and the cardinal's mitres and hoods, also rejected by him. He is also usually depicted with a serene, deeply expressive face, a reflection of his inner self. Another element typical of his iconography is the monstrance, which represents his defence of the Eucharist.

Los 130

Northern European School of the 18th century."Virgin and Child, the dove of the Holy Spirit and angels".Etching on vellum with hand-illuminated border. Golden haloes.Measurements: 9,5 x 12,5 cm.A striking border of flowers in the purest Baroque style frames an etched composition. It is a scene with the Virgin, the Child Jesus, the dove of the Holy Spirit and a group of winged angels offering her baskets with fruit and flowers. The brightly coloured border is reminiscent of Baroque works in which the beautiful, highly developed garlands competed for prominence with the subject itself.
