JOSEPH WEST OF BATH (1800-1835)
'Charlecombe Church near Bath, Somersetshire'
signed 'J. West' (centre right), and inscribed as title and dated 1808 on the reverse
watercolour,
11 1/2 x 15 1/2 on (29.2 x 39.4cm)
An inscription on a label on the reverse states 'a gift from Mr West to Miss A. Aspinall'
The Anglican Church of St. Mary, Charlcombe was built in 12th century. In 1734 the novelist Henry Fielding married at the church.
Joseph West is believed to have been a pupil of Thomas Barker of Bath. His landscapes mostly depict views in the vicinity of Bath, though he is known to have also visited Wales. He is possibly the same J. West who published a volume of instructional drawings of trees and cottages, done in soft ground etching. He exhibited four times at the British Institution.
