Oppida Mercatoria 26, Pagos et Villas 625, Una cum singulis Hundredis, et Fluminibus in eodem, Vera descriptio.', rare engraved hand coloured map of Norfolk, 1574, [1579], map engraved by Cornelius Hogius, Arms of Queen Elizabeth and Thomas Seckford, instigator of the atlas project and Saxton's patron, with his motto "Pestis Patriae Pigricies" above his Coat of Arms, ornamental cartouche upper left hand corner, index of hundreds upper right hand corner and scale of distance lower right hand corner, sailing ships and sea monster depicted in the North Sea. The first printed map of Norfolk and of any individual English county forming the precedent for most 17th century maps of Norfolk. Printed area of map approx. size 335 x 495mm, fairly closely trimmed at left hand margin (approx. 5mm of margin remaining beyond plate impression left hand margin, other margins bigger). Framed and glazed, the whole approx. size 380 x 530mm. Saxton began his survey in about 1570, and he was granted royal letters patent on 22 July 1577 giving him a ten year privilege for printing and selling his maps. Norfolk, the first map of any single English county, was completed in 1574. As the maps were engraved they were sent in a proof state to the Lord Treasurer, Lord Burleigh, who used them as working documents. The maps were finally assembled for publication, with some amendments, in the Atlas in 1579, as here. Rare and influential first English county map, reflecting Norfolk's importance as one of the largest and most populous of the English counties in the 16th Century, with Norwich one of the leading provincial cities of the period, and Great Yarmouth & King's Lynn prosperous trading ports providing maritime links with Northern Europe.
