The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are undulations at the upper corners. It appears as though the painting was once framed with a slip with spandrel corners at the top. There are deformations in the paint layers following this shape at the top corners which have been filled and retouched. There is another area of retouching at the lower left corner. There is damage above the sitter’s head which has caused deformation to the canvas and losses to the paint layer. In the background there is fine scale flaking and loss. The varnish has degraded and become yellow with age and no longer adequately saturates the darker paint layers below.
Gordon Richards atop Singaporesigned 'Frank Griggs / Newmarket' (lower right) and inscribed lower left with the names of the horse and jockey oil on canvas49 x 67cmProvenance:Christie's, London, 20th July 1951, lot 26;Landwade Hall, Exning, SuffolkCondition report: Framed 61 x 79cmOil on canvas which has not been lined. The canvas tension is slack and there are undulations across the surface. There are small damages along the upper edge lying beneath the frame. Fine scale flaking and loss is occurring in the paint layer following the outlines of the compositions, this is most noticeable around the sitter’s face and figure and the cause of this flaking is unclear. There are other localised areas of cracked and raised paint which have been caused by impact damage. There is a thin layer of varnish present which is even and semi-glossy.
A study of a horseinscribed 'J F H 1851' (lower right)oil on panel24.5 x 29cmProvenance:Landwade Hall, Exning, SuffolkCondition report: Framed 39 x 44.5cmOil on board. The board appears to be roughly cut when viewed from the reverse and it is possible that the work is on card which has been mounted onto panel, this would need to be investigated. The paint layer is in a good condition overall. There are a few dents and lumps across the surface which appear to have been present when the work was painted. There is very fine scale flaking occurring around the horse's bridle which has led to small losses. The varnish is matte and yellowed with a dark appearance and some brown accretions.
