"Forbin's was one of the first important French books to use lithography on a grand scale, and the standard of production is equal to that of Napoléon's 'Description de l'Egypte' or Denon's 'Voyage'" (Navari, Blackmer). Im August 1817 begab sich der klassizistische Maler und Archäologe Louis Graf de Forbin in Begleitung des Künstlers Pierre Prévost und des Ingenieurs de Bellefonds auf eine einjährige Reise als Ankaufskommissionär für den Louvre in Denons Nachfolge in die Levante. Diese führte ihn nach Melos, Athen, Konstantinopel, Smyrna, Ephesus, Akkon, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Kairo, Luxor und Theben. Auf prächtigen Tafeln zeigt Forbin Architekturdenkmäler und Ausgrabungsstätten mit archäologischem Blick, doch skizziert durch die kunstvolle Verwebung seiner Darstellungen mit fiktiven phantastischen Elementen auch ein romantisch-klassizistisches Bild der bereisten Gegenden. (Vgl. Leitzke, Orient, S. 77). - In den ersten Lagen stärker u. durchgehend etw. stockfleckig, tlws. mit sorgsamen Hinterlegungen, die kol. Tafeln farbfrisch. Minor browning. Well preserved with some repairs. Atlas volume with 80 full paged Illustrations, 70 of them lithographed by G. Engelmann after Lecomte, Deseynes, Castellan, Carle, and Horace Vernet, Fragonard, Thiénon, Legros, Isabey and others (3 of the in color), 8 in aquatint from Debucourt after Forbin and 2 engraved. "Forbin's was one of the first important French books to use lithography on a grand scale, and the standard of production is equal to that of Napoleon's 'Description de l'Egypte' or Denon's 'Voyage'" (Navari, Blackmer). In August 1817, the classicist painter and archaeologist Louis Count de Forbin, accompanied by the artist Pierre Prévost and the engineer de Bellefonds, set off on a one-year journey to the Levant as acquisitions commissioner for the Louvre in Denon's succession. This took him to Melos, Athens, Constantinople, Smyrna, Ephesus, Acre, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Cairo, Luxor and Thebes. On magnificent plates, Forbin shows architectural monuments and excavation sites from an archaeological perspective but at the same time sketches a romantic classicist picture of the regions he visited through the artful interweaving of his depictions with fictitious fantastical elements. (Cf. Leitzke, Orient, p. 77). - In the first layers stronger and throughout somewhat foxed, partly with careful backings, the col. plates in bright colors. Plate 15 with backed white margin, 17 m. small missing part, mounted on paper, 40 with one backed tear (ca. 8 cm), 55 with min. restored tear, 77 with rep. tear in the white margin and small missing part. - Very rare.
