NOBEL ALFRED: (1833-1896) Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman and philanthropist who bequeathed his fortune to establish the Nobel Prize. The scientist's most famous invention was that of dynamite, which was patented in 1867. An outstanding archive relating to the establishment of a dynamite factory in Italy, comprising - (i) A.L.S., A Nobel, three pages, 4to, Paris, 6th September 1872, to [Paul] Barbe, in French. Nobel provides his detailed requirements for establishing a factory to produce dynamite at Avigliana, near Turin, under the guidance of his agent Casimir Robaudi ('Voici le petit devis pour la Fabrique Italienne et le projet de contrat avec Robaudi') setting out his requirements in a detailed table, with their immediate and defrayable costs, including specifications for brick buildings, power of the traction engines, nitrite grinders, and other machinery, a building to house nitric acid, an ice room, various other wooden buildings for the production and washing of glycerine and dynamite, and for packing the dynamite, cartridge making, water heaters, and enclosures, and remarking that he envisages the quick production and sale of the dynamite, financed by three months' credit. Nobel then proceeds to define the terms of the contract under which the business should operate, giving the outlines for a five-year contract with Robaudi in nine numbered paragraphs, explaining that Robaudi will be named as agent for the Italian business and will be responsible for the costs of selling the dynamite sent to him, for which he can set a price above market rates, provided that the company can cancel the contract if Robaudi's consumption and marketing contravenes their policies, or if the company does not receive payment for the dynamite. Nobel advises Barbe to revise the contract as he sees fit before sending it to Carstens, the merchant in Hamburg. (ii) A fine, large original pen and ink plan of the proposed site of the dynamite factory in the Commune di Avigliana, prepared and signed by the surveyor Giuseppe Ferando, one page, large oblong folio, Turin, 27th July 1872, entitled Planimetria di parte della regione Valoja presso il trucco di San Martino, coloured in two shades of blue (one defining the waterways) and also featuring light pencil drawings of buildings to the left margin. (iii) A pencil sketch of several buildings at Avigliana entitled Croquis de fabrique de nitroglycerine a Avigliana, one page, oblong 4to, n.p., n.d., including the facilities labelled for 'Preparation, separation et lavage a l'eau'. (iv) A finely executed and detailed pen and ink plan of various constructions and buildings, one page, oblong folio, n.p., n.d., captioned in French, including cartoucheries, magasin, filtrage & dynamiterie, lavages, pompe pour l'appareil, glacier & magasin a glycerine, hanger a bomb acide nitrique. Maison de garde, chien de garde etc. (v) A scale drawing from a patent application on transparency paper (some tears and a few large areas of paper loss to the edges) bearing the official oval stamp of Jannot ('Constructeur - Mecanicien') and two other pen and ink and pencil sketches and drawings of machinery and apparatus. (vi) An autograph manuscript entitled Regolamento dei transporti delle Materie infiammabili ed esplodenti ('Regulations for the transportation of flammable and explosive materials') approved by the administrators Bolmira and Guglianetti, twelve pages, 4to, n.p. (Italy), 9th April 1872, commencing 'Flammable materials, such as phosphorus, phosphor matches, gun powder, turpentine, alcohol, and derivatives, objects for fireworks and any other material…..that easily starts or transmits fire, are excluded from transport if the sender has not subjected himself to the cautionary measures established by the administration' and continuing to outline the regulations concerning packaging, supervision, means of transport and other precautions which it is necessary to adhere to. (vii) Small collection of ten manuscript technical and legal documents, in Italian and French, over twenty pages in total, largely 4to, various places, 1870s, some regarding Nobel's patent and one on the printed stationery of the Dinamite Nobel factory at Avigliana. (viii) Autograph manuscript of the Atto di Costituzione della Societa per la Fabbricazione della Dinamite and Statuto della Scoieta Anonima per la Fabbricazione della Dinamite, in all over sixty pages, folio, Turin, 5th June 1873, in Italian, identifying the main shareholders, and accompanied by an eleven-page summary including a manuscript list of the shares allocated to each shareholder. A comprehensive archive relating to the Swedish chemist's important invention of dynamite and featuring an extremely rare autograph letter signed by Nobel himself, particularly desirable owing to its content. Some light overall age wear and minor faults and Nobel's letter with some light, minor staining and a few small tears to the edges. Generally G to about VG, Sml Qty. At the end of December 1871, Alfred Nobel obtained a six-year patent for the exploitation of dynamite from the Italian government, to be financed by both French and German investors. In April 1872, Nobel reached an agreement with five Parisian financiers (and engineers) to found a public limited company. Among the shareholders mentioned in the present archive were Paul Barbe, Amedeo Hoffer (director of the factory), Casimir Robaudi (agent for the Nobel company in Hamburg), Antonio Campagna (formerly mayor of Avigliana), the Hamburg merchants Carl Ferdinand Carstens and Edouard Bandmann, and the Parisian banker Gunzbourg. They acquired land near Avigliana, some thirty kilometres west of Turin, and set up a factory through a commissionaire, Robaudi, obtaining a patent for the manufacture of dynamite. The company established by Nobel continued production until being destroyed during the World War II.

[FLEMING IAN]: (1908-1964) British writer, author of the James Bond series of spy novels. An interesting collection of twenty-one original unsigned carbon typed copies of letters and other documents addressed to Ian Fleming by the journalist Antony Terry, and one copy of a letter from Fleming to E.A. Seal of the Foreign Office, forty-three pages, mainly 4to, various places (Bonn, Berlin, Vienna etc.), November 1949 - September 1963. Terry discusses a variety of subjects with Fleming, some concerning Cold War relations between West and East Germany and other countries, in part, 'It has been an interesting time here and I think will become more so as the Eastern election campaign gets going…..The Allies in Germany have got no clear picture yet as to what the Communists are going to do during their May Day and Youth parades. As a result official opinion is divided as to what should be done to counter them……Personally I do not think the Communists will start any rows on a large scale, though there will probably be a few fights when the more aggressive youngsters come up against the West-Berliners. It is doubtful whether the West Berlin police are capable of coping with a large scale situation, should it arise……[Deputy British High Commissioner] Steel made no bones of the fact that the British do not trust Premier Adenauer, whom he called an “old snake”…..the impression one gets in Bonn is that the German government could not care less about the British. Politically, Adenauer's eyes turn to France where Ruhr coal and French iron can do business and to America for as long as the dollars last' (22nd February 1950), 'Parachute General “Papa” Ramcke, who has recently been in the news for his build up of the “Green Devils” (the former German paratroop corps) into a new association with neo-Nazi leanings, is publishing a new book……Ramcke is said to refer to his interrogations in London and attacks Lt. Col. Scotland of the War Office war crimes staff…..Ramcke is one of the new vintage of German generals who has ambitions to be a Fuhrer. He is frowned on by some of the more “respectable” generals for being too outspoken' (21st September 1951), 'Enclosed some material - authentic - on “escape routes”……Most of the routes to the West run nowadays through Hungary and Czechoslovakia to Austria, and most of the agents are Russians or Czechs. When they arrive in Hungary and Czechoslovakia on the first stage of their journey Soviet authorities provide the agent with a Propusk (frontier-crossing identification)…..With this document the agent can travel unmolested from the Soviet zone by normal civilian transport across the demarcation line into the British or US zone of Austria…..the agent has to pass a short test in the language of the country whose nationality he has temporarily adopted, and also in the language of the country to which he is travelling……Between one and two hundred Soviet agents are sent in and out of Austria monthly in both directions from the surrounding Soviet satellites. The names of about one percent are known to the Austrian secret police…..An alternative method is for the agent to be escorted through the no-mans land of barbed wire and mines along the frontiers between Austria and Czechoslovakia and Hungary. He then crosses the border on foot and gives himself up to the nearest Austrian frontier guard, claiming that he is a refugee from Communism. His story is designed to be foolproof enough to stop the Austrian official handing him over, as they are legally bound to do, to the Soviet occupation authorities in Austria……Many of these “foot sloggers” are sent over to gain information or to penetrate “Radio Free Europe”. One agent sent for this purpose recently had memorised the names of 350 persons whom he claimed had been with him in a labour camp for political prisoners in Hungary. Repeated questioning failed to shake his story and the names were checked and found correct. He was arrested in Vienna while on his way back to Hungary “on foot”, his assignment completed' (2nd February 1954), 'Enclosed are photos (no longer present) of the Spanish Riding School, including the special one you wanted. We are still struggling in Berlin to get photos of the transvestites and I think I now have a photographer who is prepared to brave their charms, either to take some pictures of them himself, or to obtain what he calls “portraits” of them, whatever that means……I tried the Nazi treasure hunt on them [The Sunday Times] as well but it never made the grade. I am sorry, as I feel this whole story of the missing Nazi gold which…..is still buried somewhere in the Salzkammergut, is a splendid subject for a feature. I talked to the man who says he knows where it may be located but has been forbidden to do anything by the Styrian authorities because the buried boxes may also contain material about Jewish property expropriations which involves a number of people still alive. All this I should have thought would make a good dramatic story for our younger and not-so-younger readers…..I cannot help feeling that the story of those last sinister days of the war in the Alpine valleys of the Salzkammergut, with scores of SS and Quisling governments and Gestapo officials from Berlin (Kaltenbrunner was captured by the Americans in this area) wandering about with their cases of gold bars melted down from the gold teeth and jewellery of the Jews gassed in the concentration camps and looking for somewhere to bury them so that no-one else knew, and all suspecting each other, with the end drawing in and the Americans only a few miles away, should make a grisly and macabre framework for the story of the now-forbidden search…..I can't help thinking that the SunTimes doesn't know what they are missing!' (17th May 1960), 'Enclosed are the pictures (no longer present) taken of the Berlin Transvestists, together with a leaflet on the place they were taken. “Rickey Renee”, the figure in the photos in women's clothes, is an American (male), aged 25, born in Miami, Florida…..tried a tapdancing act which failed, decided being a woman was more profitable…..now finds this line in Berlin suitable to local tastes…..' (25th May 1960), 'I was so disappointed to hear that you had been here again and that I missed you only by hours. I was told to take a few days off last week, as the sort of remnants of a summer holiday which was interrupted first by the Kennedy visit and last weekend again by Harold Wilson in Hamburg….If one had known you were coming I would have returned a day earlier' (9th September 1963). The majority of the letters with file holes to the left edges, some stapled or pinned to the upper left corners, others with minor paperclip rust stains, light creasing, some tears to the edges etc. Generally G, 25 Antony Terry (1913-1992) British Journalist, a former European Editor of The Sunday Times who was first hired in 1949 by Fleming (at the time the Foreign manager for the newspaper). Terry's obituary in The Independent stated that he was 'one of the paper's most valuable assets, a one-man listening post, a fastidious checker of facts, a burrower into dark corners and a traveller who never complained of fatigue'.

An Italian micromosaic, Rome, circa 1800, depicting a recumbent brown and white spaniel, within a grassy landscape, with trees beyond, the oval panel edged with a red and white millefiore pellet surround, mounted as a brooch within a finely chased gold floral border, with glazed hinged locket compartment verso, and ring suspension above, dimensions 35 x 28mm. The micromosaic is in the manner of Antonio Aguatti (late 18th century - 1846). £1,200-£1,500 --- Provenance: A similar example depicting the same composition was sold at Christie’s, 11 April 2002, Sale 6674, The Dr Anton C R Dreesmann Collection. Lot 842. In the 18th century, large-scale Italian mosaics, inspired by the grand works of Ancient Rome, were falling out of favour. Reserved mainly for decorating the floors of Rome’s religious buildings– ie St Peter’s Basilica - the artisans responsible for creating them were increasingly short of work. Employed by the Studio del Mosaico della Fabbrica della Basilica di San Pietro, later known as the Vatican Mosaic Workshop, they supplemented their income by creating miniaturised versions of their mosaics to sell to private customers.  Giacomo Raffaelli (1775-1836) is widely considered to be the founding father of the craft of micromosaics. These miniature works of art grew in popularity with the arrival of wealthy travellers on the Grand Tour, perfectly capturing Italy’s rich artistic tradition in miniature, and making the perfect souvenir from their travels in Italy. The art form of micromosaics made dramatic advances from the classically inspired images of architecture prevalent in the late 18th century, towards more natural representations, due largely to the mosaicist Antonio Aguatti. Aguatti worked for the Vatican workshops whilst simultaneously running his own studio, and is credited with perfecting the techniques to create a variety of tesserae shapes, rather than just the uniform square and rectangular forms, and for the skills to blend different coloured tints. These multicoloured shaped tesserae lent greater realism to the the portrayal of plants, flowers, birds and animals. By the 1820s, Aguatti’s images were widely copied by other workshops, making exact attribution to an individual master impossible without signatures on each work. The depiction of dogs was highly popular as part of the romantic genre of the 19th century, dogs being symbolic of faithful love. Due to their association with royalty, King Charles spaniels were frequently portrayed in paintings and micromosaics, this trend for pets as subjects largely led by the artist Edwin Landseer (1802-73). Literature: Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel: The Gilbert Collection, Micromosaics, London 2002: For the similar composition of a spaniel in micromosaic signed by Antonio Aguatti, see p.75, no. 23. Condition Report The panel is in very good condition, using shaped and vari-tinted tesserae. Non missing. Light surface wear only to the gold mount visible from the reverse. Gross weight 14.8gm.
