* GRAEME WILCOX (SCOTTISH b. 1967),FAITH HEALERoil on canvas, signed and titled versoimage size 102cm x 112cm, overall size 116cm x 126cmFramed. Note: Painted in the early 2000s this work was completed during a time of self-reflection and meditation for the artist, and a desire to "fix ourselves". The painting represents the same figure as both patient and healer in an attempt to represent this process of human reflection. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1993, Wilcox continues to prosper as a painter based in Glasgow. He exhibits regularly in solo shows and group exhibitions throughout the UK and Europe. Recent work depicts people and events experienced in public spaces around the city. These paintings show figures engaged in ambiguous actions in half-remembered spaces. These situations and scenes have lodged in the memory due to some resonance or poignancy that can't quite be dismissed. The resulting paintings are partly an attempt to balance a sense of stillness with a sense of movement; a tension that hopefully generates a heightened feeling of the strangeness of everyday life and those around us. Graeme has collaborated on a number of multimedia projects with Mischief-la-bas-performance group and with other artists, culminating in projects at the Arches and Tramway in Glasgow and the Albany Theatre in London. He has also organised two large scale mural projects in collaboration with the East End Community Arts for Glasgow Health Board and devised and ran "Face to Face" photography project in Glasgow. This Arts Council funded project culminated in a temporary public artwork at the East End Festival in Glasgow. In 2011 he completed a prestigious portrait commission for the newly opened Conway Hall in London. Graeme's work is held in private collections in Europe, the USA and Canada and in public collections in Petrezovodsk, Russia and the Gulf State of Qatar. He is also held in the Corporate Collection of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh. The most recent example of Graeme Wilcox's work we have offered was "On the Same Page" (a 112 x 102 cm oil on canvas) which was sold in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 28th March 2021, lot 722 for £5000 (hammer).

ALEXANDER SAMOKHVALOV (RUSSIAN 1894-1971)Portrait of Sergei Aleksandrovich Rinkevich, oil on canvas87.5 x 100 cm (34 1/2 x 39 3/4 in.)PROVENANCECollection of Sergei RinkevichThence by descent in the family LOT NOTESSold along a signed and notarized letter of provenance from the grandson of Sergei Rinkevich (copy available upon request)When Samokhvalov produced this work in the early 1950s, he was renowned for monumental Socialist Realist history paintings, as well as intimate portraits in interior settings, including the present and Girl in an Interior (sold for $131,000, including buyer's premium, at Shapiro Auctions, December 10, 2016, lot 7). The sitter, Professor Sergei Rinkevich, was an eminent electrical engineer and professor, best known as the purveyor of the electrical drive in the USSR. Dr. Rinkevich marshalled the founding of the world's first university department dedicated to the improvement of the drive, which, under his directorship in the 1920s and 30s, launched the rapid electrification of the Soviet heavy industry and navy.According to the letter provided by the sitter's grandson, Igor Sergeevich Rinkevich, who witnessed the making of the work, Samokhvalov painted the image over several sessions in the family's Leningrad apartment in the early 1950s. (See ref. 1 for a photograph of Igor Rinkevich together with the work). Capturing the likeness of one of the nation's distinguished scientists, Samokhvalov shows Dr. Rinkevich deep in thought, his fingers bookmarking a red volume -- a pose reminiscent of Renaissance and Baroque portraits of scholars, such as Bronzino's Portrait of a Young Man with a Book in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. With characteristic economy of brushwork, Samokhvalov pictures his subject attentively and at a considerable scale, demonstrating his hand as a leading Soviet portraitist.Alexander Samokhvalov, one of the foremost representatives of the Leningrad school of painting, began his artistic career in 1914 at the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. Unlike many of his peers at the academy and the Mir iskusstva circle, such as Eugene Lanceray, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, or Alexander Osmerkin, in the late 1920s Samokhvalov enthusiastically embraced the development of Socialist Realism for which he is remembered. As in his most recognizable work — Girl in a Football Shirt, awarded the gold medal at the International Art Fair in Paris (which also exhibited Pablo Picasso's Guernica) — his paintings from the 1930s often showcase the first generation of Soviet women as the face of modernity and strength.CONDITIONUnframed, the painting is in age-appropriate condition. Very fine craquelure visible upon close inspection. Flaking resulting from craquelure visible to the left upper edge. Rubbing resulting in scattered losses to the corners and perimeter. Inspection under UV light shows no signs of restoration.Kindly note, the auction is comprised of two sessions:Session I: Russian and Asian Art, Antiques and Jewelry, lots 1-331Session II: European, North and South American, and Ethnographic Art, Antiques, Jewelry, and Design, lots 500-827N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. Henry Moore (1889 Castleford/Yorkshire - 1986 Much Hadham) (F)'Figures with Sky Background I', Farblithografie auf Bütten, 46 cm x 45 cm Blattmaß, 27 cm x 27,5 cm Plattenmaß, signiert, 30/50 nummeriert, verso betiteltProvenienz: Privatsammlung HannoverHenry Moore wurde am 30. Henry Moore (1889 Castleford/Yorkshire - 1986 Much Hadham) (F)'Figures with Sky Background I', lithograph in colours on laid paper, sheet size 46 cm x 45 cm, plate size 27 cm x 27.5 cm, signed, numbered 30/50, titled on the reverseProvenance: Private collection, HanoverHenry Moore was born on 30th July 1898 in Castleford in West Yorkshire, England, and was one of the most important English sculptors of the 20th century. Moore, who is best known for his large-scale sculptures, also left behind a considerable graphic oeuvre. Many of his prints are to be understood as two-dimensional preliminary studies for his works in marble or bronze or draw upon the unmistakable formal language of his sculptural works. The central theme of his work was the human body, predominantly the female. During numerous stays in Paris, the artist established contacts with the avant garde, especially with Constantin Brancusi and Pablo Picasso. Despite his rise to become one of the most successful British artists of the postwar period, Moore, who grew up as the seventh of eight children in a miner's family, lived very frugally, so that most of his money went into funding the Henry Moore Foundation, which to this day supports education and promotion in the field of art.
