A polyurethane resin troll skull144cm wide This was commissioned for Beowulf TV series Please note the plinth is not included in this lot  The Rod Vass Collection - Lots 363-371 Rod Vass is a professional visual artist who originally studied Fine Art at Newcastle and Sunderland Colleges of Art. He then worked as an Archaeological artist at Newcastle University before moving to London to pursue an art career. Rod exhibited and sold paintings and began a parallel career as an illustrator, represented in London and New York. He also began to create 3D sculptural works for Film, TV and other clients. In 1997 he formed Armordillo Ltd, where he pioneered and developed the use of sculpting with sprayed polyurethane resins and foams within the film industry, starting with 650 suits of armour for Ridley Scott’s Oscar winning film Gladiator. Since its inception, Armordillo has been engaged in research and development into a wide range of experimental sculptural processes. Along with their specialist team, Rod and Armordillo have created works for numerous well known film and TV projects. In recent years Rod has been joined by his son Louis Vass, who has added his artistic abilities and highly developed digital art skills to the Armordillo portfolio. His 3D designs have brought a high level of sophistication to the design process – enabling realistic 3D images of design work to be viewed in situ even before construction has begun. Their work ranges in scale from intricately detailed models to huge set pieces measuring thousands of square feet. The current large sculptures at Summers Place reflect their interest in the combination of traditional artistic skills with the latest technology. Most of these sculptures started life as pieces created for Film, TV and live performance. All have been re-worked and re-purposed as freestanding statement pieces, suitable for outdoor or indoor display. The materials are relatively lightweight, allowing for easy installation in a range of locations. They are completely weatherproof and can be left outdoors indefinitely. Each piece has a makers plaque authenticating it as a genuine Rod Vass creation. The artists are currently concentrating primarily on private commissions and are happy to consider proposals for sculptural designed pieces at any scale. Garden OrnamentGarden Statuary Film Prop

Vlaho Bukovac (Croatian, 1855-1922)Portrait of George Hepburn; Portrait of Anne Hepburn a pair, one signed and dated 'B. BUKOVAC 91' (lower left); the other signed, inscribed and dated 'B. BUKOVAC/LIVERPOOL 91' (lower left)oil on canvaseach 122.8 x 88.9cm (48 3/8 x 35in). (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Charles Edwards, London.Private collection, USA (acquired from the above).Thence by descent. The young Dalmatian painter Vlaho Bukovac (1855-1922) studied and made his early career in Paris, enjoying an early triumph at the Salon in 1882 with his nude La Grande Iza (Beljanski Collection, Novi Sad). On the back of this success he was taken up by the English dealers Vicars Bros., who brought him to London, exhibited many of his largest paintings and introduced him to likely patrons. Two of these were shipbuilding engineers and businessmen from the north of England, Samson Fox of Leeds and Richard LeDoux of Liverpool. Besides buying Bukovac's works, these men were soon inviting the artist to their homes, where, Bukovac later wrote in his autobiography, they treated him as a gentleman. They commissioned further pictures from him, and introduced him to their own friends whose portraits Bukovac painted in turn. The patronage and friendship of Fox and LeDoux laid the foundation of Bukovac's lifelong love affair with England.George Hepburn (1841-1909) was evidently a business friend of LeDoux's in Liverpool. Although no direct contact between them is recorded, both were highly successful men at the heart of the city's progressive shipping circles, and both lived in the affluent suburb of West Derby, an area of mansions on the fringes of Liverpool's growing sprawl of working-class terraces. Hepburn and his wife Anne, who were both Scottish, had moved to Liverpool in 1866, where George rapidly made a formidable reputation as a naval architect, first with Robert McAndrew & Co., and then on his own account. According to the author of Liverpool's 'Legion of Honour' (1893), Hepburn since coming to Liverpool had 'designed between 300 and 400 steamers'. Such was his expertise in naval matters, he was in great demand in legal cases involving the loss of ships; the Liverpool Mercury calling him 'The Judge-Maker' because three 'eminent counsel' on whose side he had appeared in trials had been raised to the bench almost immediately afterwards. Reputedly his dour and gruff exterior concealed a heart of gold, a keen sense of humour and a penchant for generous hospitality, and he was an excellent raconteur. He was also a fine shot, although he lost an eye in a shooting accident on the Scottish moors (it is unclear whether this post-dated Bukovac's portrait or whether the artist was allowed to represent a glass eye or disguise the loss altogether; contemporary and later photographs mostly show Hepburn in profile from the left). According to one obituarist, Hepburn 'was one of the first men in Liverpool to have a motor car, and when he drove that then novel equipage through the town, Liverpudlians, agape with amazement at the spectacle of a horseless vehicle, literally mobbed his vehicle'.Little is known about his wife Anne. Her family name was Martin, she was three years older than her husband, and with him she had two daughters, Mary (born in 1872) and Lucy (born in 1878). Less than a year after sitting to Bukovac, in June 1892, she died at the age of 53. Her widower would mourn her for a decent interval, but in March 1895 he re-married the 'charming' Ada Snelson, 'daughter of a Liverpool citizen'. Is there in these contemporary words a hint that Hepburn's first wife had shared his 'Scottish' dourness, but not the more genial qualities to be associated with their domicile?Perhaps unexpectedly, Bukovac's portraits are documented. Hepburn wrote a friendly letter to the artist on 18 August 1891 (now in the archive of Bukovac House, Cavtat, Croatia) in which he writes of the 'high quality' of the two works, evidently recently finished. Later Bukovac recalled of his stay in Liverpool during that summer with Mr and Mrs LeDoux that he had been so showered with hospitality he had managed to do very little painting. There can be no doubt, however, that LeDoux was behind these two works. It is tempting to see him, over a cigar at the club, suggesting the commission to Hepburn as a fine way to mark his fiftieth birthday that year. And from the character of the two works, their scale, their studied accuracy and their subtle insights, there is no doubt that in Bukovac's response, his artistry and professional dedication were fully engaged. We are grateful to Alex Kidson for compiling this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A LARGE REGENCY GILTWOOD AND GESSO CONVEX WALL MIRRORCIRCA 181583cm diameter overall A closely related mirror sold from the Gyrn Castle Collection, Christies London, Lot 83, 17th June 2006, Lot 83, £9,000. Another similar was sold in these rooms, 30th May 2022, Lot 291 £5625 (including premium).Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old splits. Various old wear to the gilding. The mirror plate appears original and bears the expected depletion in the form of a grey 'fogging' to the plate. The plate does reflect a clear image beyond the light 'fogging' (Please see additional images for visual reference) Some slight movement of the ebonised moulding from its position against the inside edge of the frame. This should be straightforward for a restorer to remedy if required. The whole of the reverse of the frame is covered with paper (bearing tears and losses) so it is not presently possible to see if the rear panel is original. Some old worm damage is likely but not clearly visible past the paper covering the back. Very few holes are detectabel fromt he front of the mirror. Some nail/screw holes from previous methods of hanging the mirror. The flat outermost edge of the frame (nearest to the wall. Shows evidence of gilding but also but also has a 'brown' wash over it that is likely original. There is wear, chipping, fragmentary loss and some chips of loss there. Overall in good original condition for its age. This mirror is a relalively unusual large scale for its type. Please refer to the additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

A PAIR OF MONUMENTAL CARVED GILTWOOD PIER MIRRORS19TH CENTURY255cm high, 150cm wideThe combination of Chinese Ho-Ho birds and the Rocco scrolls and rocaille seen in these mirrors is a style popularised by Thomas Chippendale in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director (1754-1762). This 'Chinese Chippendale' style was adopted by many other top London makers of the mid 18th century including Ince & Mayhew, Thomas Johnson and Matthias Lock. For a design for a 'Pier Glass Frame' by Chippendale incorporating these two design sources see, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director, The Third Edition (1762), Reprint by John Tiranti Ltd, 1939, plate CLXIX. Designs for related 'Pier Glasses' by Ince & Mayhew see The Universal System of Household Furniture, 1759, Reprint by Alec Tiranti, 1960, plate LXXX & LXXXII. For a pair of carved giltwood mirrors of of related form but slightly smaller scale, see Christie's, New York, 500 Years: Decorative Art Europe, 15th April 2011, Lot 497 (£242,500).For examples of similar mid-18th century mirrors incorporating multiple plates and elaborately carved frames, see page 112 and 115.Provenance:Barnwell Manor, NorthamptonshireWindsor House Antiques   Condition Report: Both with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Various old splits and chips. Frame have had the gilding refreshed, this appears to have been executed using gold leaf. The gilt surface with the expected wear, chips, losses and deposits. These including repairs to the neck of one Ho-ho bird and to both pierced surmounts. Some minor gaps between mirror plates and the frame. The expected shrinkage cracks/gaps along the lines of underling construction. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 416

A CLOSELY MATCHED PAIR OF GEORGE IV MAHOGANY CHAMBER TABLESATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, CIRCA 1820each 73.8cm high, 68.5cm wide, 46cm deepFor a related Gillows chamber table see Susan E Stuart, Gillows of LANCASTER and LONDON 1730-1840, Antique Collectors' Club, 2008, p300, pl328. 'Small writing or chamber tables were introduced during the early 19th century and several were drawn in the General Sketch Book 1810. A hinged compartment with a pop-up lid was sunk into the writing surface to accommodate an inkwell and other writing equipment. The frieze drawer had to be indented in order to fit round the sides of the ink compartment. Chamber tables with plain turned or reeded legs retained their popularity since a similar design was drawn in the Estimate Sketch Book in 1823'.Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, old splits and chips comensurate with age and useSome fading to colour, staining and ring marks to the tops. Attention to the surfaces by a skilled restorer would improve the appearance considerably. The two tables are very close to each-other in all aspects but some very slight variations in proportion of the turning of the legs (that could be explained by them being hand turned). The figuring of the timber varies slightly between the two. The hinges of the lidded compartments vary between the two (one set has three screw hole son each side, the other has just two. Overall it seems unlikely that they were conceived as a pair but careful polishing in particular could make them appear as a pair prior to very careful inspection. Both tables finished equally on all sides so can free stand and remain presentable. The handles and locks appear original. The keys are present to operate the locks. one lock lacking two screws. The handles of the two tables match eachother. The casters of the two tables all appear original and the designs of them match eachother overall, there may be very slight variation in the scale/ finishing of them. One front leg of one table previously broken (at a relatively clean break) towards the uppermost part of the leg. (see images)To the interior of the lidded element of one table, the original division elements for the pair of inkpots are now lacking. The interior of the lidded element of the other table is lacking its divisions entirely. Both with solid mahogany drawer linings throughout. Please refer to all additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

John Piper C.H. (British, 1903-1992)Mosaic Coffee Table, circa 1957 signed 'John/Piper' (lower right)ceramic mosaic, painted metal and wood107.5 cm. (42 1/4) longFootnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, from whom acquired by the parents of the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.In 1957 Piper saw another artist Martin Froy working on a mosaic mural at the Kingston workshop of Dennis M. Williams & Co. Dennis Williams was from a lineage of 'Freeman Tilers' and proposed that he and Piper design some tables. The intention was to revive the use of mosaic as a modern decorative art and indeed during the late 1950s and 1960s many new civic and commercial buildings incorporated mosaics as a featured surface especially in the public areas. With Williams' principal assistant, Mrs Grace Grove, vitreous glass, ceramic and porcelain was imported from Italy, Sweden, Spain and India. Some squares were made to Piper's specification e.g. a rich monastral blue and a delicate pale yellow. Thus Piper had the technical and workshop facilities to interpret directly his designs into mosaic patterns. He worked closely with setting out the individual tesserae in all the ventures. In 1957 Piper's main pre-occupation with stained glass design fed directly into how he set about displaying the mosaic colours onto the table tops. Namely he favoured using distinct colours in bold abstracted patterns but with something of the effect of age and softening of ancient stained glass by partial interspersing and graduating of colour boundaries. Piper created four main scales of mosaic tables, another similar example of the present lot is illustrated in Frances Spalding's John Piper, Myfanwy Piper: Lives in Art, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2009, colour plate 53. Another example on this scale is also in the collection of Pallant House, Chichester. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 12

A monumental and important carved marble sundialPortuguese, Oporto region, mid 18th century 357cm high by130cm wide by 62cm deepPortugal has a rich tradition of country houses  and manors indigenously known as  solares or quintas. Some were modelled on the great 18th century gardens of Le Notre  and other landscape architects in France. Under King Joao, himself a great patron of the arts, began the great 18th century  period of Portuguese baroque.  The previous austere architectural style albeit heavily influenced by renaissance Italy was replaced  with exuberance.  With great profits from  its colonies and most especially gold and precious stones from  Minas Gerias and the Sertao of Sao Paulo in Brazil, it was the golden era of Portuguese architecture and ornament. From it there emerged a new artistic language. Named the Joanine, in honour of the king, it was  an architectural style  that transformed quintas  not only in Portugal  but also in the nation’s Atlantic provinces and overseas colonies. This spectacular sundial , monumental in scale incorporates many architectural elements synonymous with the  baroque architecture of the  mid 18th century.It was a  highly creative Italian  who created  a style of  this style of architecture perfectly suited to Northern Portugal. Born in 1691 and trained in Sienna Nicolau Nasoni  arrived in Oporto  in 1725. Having established his reputation modernising the city’s cathedral, he was commissioned by  Jeronimo de Tavora e Noronha to build  the Church of Clerigos, one of Oporto’s great 18th century churches.  Commissions for other churches and quintas followed of which the most well known is the grand solar de Mateus, known all over the world for the rose wine bearing its name. The architectural composition of this sundial  probably owes more to  the façade of the Cas dos Porto Carreiro. Commissioned by Antonio de Vasconcelos Carvalho e Menezes, a wealthy Portugese noble who made part of his wealth in Brazil it was constructed by a Spanish architect but heavily influenced by  Nasoni’s work. The volute scrolls and the foliate elements as well as the stylized lambrequins all echo Nasoni’s designs for  the gilt woodwork of Oporto churches. Garden ornament Garden statue
