(HC) Fine, decorative map of the southeastern part of Spain from the Strait of Gibraltar to Alicante, including Marbella, Malaga, Sevilla, Granada and Almeria. The map is richly adorned with a title cartouche, scale of miles cartouche featuring a cartographer, two coats of arms, two compass roses and a sea battle. A legend at bottom identifies archbishoprics, bishoprics, and universities. French text on verso. Lovely old color with wide margins, a few small spots, and short centerfold separations in top and bottom blank margins. There are a few abrasions, a small damp stain, tiny tears and chips all confined to blank margins, far from map image. (+B)

It is decorated with a sailing ship, sea monster, and strapwork title and distance scale cartouches. This is from the first edition, with Latin text on verso. Marginal soiling with a light damp stain in blank margin at top left. Manuscript page number and cardinal directions in blank margins. (A)

Portugal (Portugallia et Algarbia quae olim Lusitania. Auctore Vernando Alvaro Secco), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1635. 19.4 x 15”. (HC) Two superb compass roses orient this beautiful map of Portugal with north to the right. The cartography is based on Fernando Alvarez Secco, a Portuguese chart maker whose (1560) map was used by various publishers until the end of the 17th century. The map is adorned with numerous artistic embellishments including ships, coats-of-arms, Neptune astride a sea monster, and a title cartouche flanked by Moors using scientific instruments. The imprint of Willem and Joannes Blaeu is at lower right. French text on verso. Ref: Goss (Blaeu) no.57. Wide margins with a few small stains primarily above the title and distance scale cartouches, a damp stain in the lower right blank margin, and a few small edge tears confined to the blank margins. An ownership label is adhered to the lower right corner, well away from the image. (B)

Portugal (Le Royaume de Portugal et des Algarves…), Sanson/Jaillot, Atlas Nouveau, Paris, ca. 1696. 21.8 x 29.5”. (HC) This large, decorative map of Portugal depicts numerous towns of various sizes and the topography of the land. The map is adorned with two large, allegorical cartouches. The title cartouche features Mercury, a river god, and numerous cherubs. The distance scale cartouche is surrounded by mermen, putti wrestling a sea monster, and the coat of arms of Portugal. Title in Latin above neatline: Nova Regni Portugalliae et Algarbiae Descriptio. Ref: Pastoureau, Jaillot I-E [305]. Tears that enter 3" into map image at right and 12" into map image at top have been partially closed on verso with old paper. There are a few additional short tears that enter map border and a few small chips, one of which has been repaired with old paper with a small amount of border in facsimile at bottom right. Marty 1634... / Conflictus in Alsatia Superiori), Paris, ca. 1648-70. 20.2 x 14.5”. (HC) A. Palatinat du Rhein, Alsace, et Partie de Souabe de Franconie &c, by Nicolas Sanson, from Cartes Generales de Toutes les Parties du Monde…, dated 1648, hand color (20.2 x 14.5"). This detailed map of eastern France, southwestern Germany and northern Switzerland depicts key towns, boundary lines and topographical features. Centered on the southern part of the Rhein River and the beginning of the Danube River, the map stretches from Frankfurt (Francfort) in the north to Basel in the south. Other key cities shown are Strasbourg, Baden-Baden, Stuttgart (Stugart), Ulm, Augsburg. The map also features a decorative cartouche and a distance scale. Engraved by R. Cordier Abbavil. Ref: Pastoureau, Sanson V [48]. Condition: Original outline color with minor toning and foxing in margins. (A) B. Eigentliche Vorbildung der Feldschlacht so im ober Elsas den 2. Marty 1634... / Conflictus in Alsatia Superiori, by Matthaus Merian, from Theatrum Europaeum, circa 1670, black & white (13.8" x 11"). This finely engraved view depicts a battle from the Thirty Years` War that took place in Upper Alsace in 1634. The towns of Sennen (Cernay), Dann (Thann), Auffholtz (Uffholtz) and Wattweil (Wattwiller) are depicted with bird`s-eye views. The title explains that Swedish General Otto Louis of Salm-Kyrburg-Morchingen was defeated during the battle. At bottom is a legend identifying numerous locations. Condition: A faint spot towards center, and a couple of short tears confined to blank margins that have been closed on verso with archival tape. (B+) See description. ()

Central Europe (Carte du Duche de Silesie Divisee en Haute et Basse et Subdivisee en ses Principalles Principaute… / Nouveau Theatre de la Guerre d`Allemagne…), Crepy, Nuremberg, 1761. 53.5 x 24.5”. (HC) This impressive, large-scale map depicts parts of central Europe during the Third Silesian War (part of the Seven Years` War). Two rococo-style title cartouches attribute the cartography to Homann. The map extends from Luxembourg and the Netherlands in the west to western Poland in the east and depicts towns, roads, boundary lines, and the topography of the land. A large inset of northeastern Poland is at top right, with its own title cartouche, Carte Particuliere de la Prusse Royale…. Printed on 3 sheets, joined as issued. Original outline color on watermarked paper with light soiling, tiny worm holes, and a couple of short cracks. There are numerous separations along the horizontal fold, the majority of which have been closed on verso with archival materials. There is a tear that enters 3" into map at left and another 3" tear to the left of the main title cartouche that have both been archivally repaired. (+C)

The decorative strapwork cartouche incorporates the distance scale. Fully engraved to illustrate the rivers, forests and mountains and locate hundreds of tiny villages. French text verso. Lightly toned with wide margins. There are light damp stains, a few tiny worm tracks, and a small hole at far right that are all confined to blank margins. (+B)

(HC) This elegantly engraved map of Westphalia, including Hamm and Lippstadt, was produced by Joannes Gigas (Gigante). The mountainous topography is graphically depicted and several small coats of arms adorn the map. Beautifully decorated with strapwork title and scale of miles cartouches. Spanish text on verso. Fine impression and original color with wide original margins and watermarked paper. Near fine save for some very light toning on the centerfold. (A)

This is from the first edition, with Latin text on verso. Lightly toned with marginal soiling and a damp stain in blank margin at top left. Russia ([Lot of 2] Russiae, vulgo Moscovia dictae, Partes Septentrionalis et Orientalis [and] Russiae, vulgo Moscovia, Pars Australis), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1680. 21.3 x 16.5”. (BW) This lot includes a matched pair of maps of Russia, each of which includes a strapwork title cartouche that credits the map to Isaac Massa, who visited Moscow in the early 1600s. The maps have no text on verso indicating they were issued after the demise of the great Blaeu publishing empire, as these were among the plates auctioned in 1677 following the fire that destroyed the printing house. Size varies slightly. A. Russiae, vulgo Moscovia dictae, Partes Septentrionalis et Orientalis. This map details the area from Finland to Siberia and beyond the Jenisej River and south to the Volga River, with Kazan and Novogorod shown. A partial coastline of Novaya Zemla is shown at the top of the map. The map is fully engraved with mountains and forests with deer, bear and other animals throughout. The title cartouche is flanked with pelts, and hunters and a wide variety of animals surround the scale of miles. The crest of the Russian Empire is shown at top. The map is nearly identical to Jansson`s map of the same title. Condition: Scattered foxing with paper added in bottom blank margin to repair several chips that enter map border in a couple of spots, with minor loss of neatline. B. Russiae, vulgo Moscovia, Pars Australis. This map covers the southern part of the empire bordering the Caucasus. The map is elaborately embellished with richly dressed people and wild animals flanking three cartouches. The imprint of Johann and Cornelius Blaeu is at bottom, just left of centerfold. Condition: Light foxing with paper added in bottom corners to repair several chips, one of which just touches neatline at left. Both are backed with Japanese tissue. Fully engraved to show forests, rivers, lakes and cities and adorned with decorative title and scale cartouches. This is from the first edition, with a blank verso. Marginal soiling. Manuscript page number, cardinal directions, and a notation in blank margins. (A)

Southeastern Europe (Novissima et Accuratissima Hungariae…), Seutter, Augsburg, ca. 1745. 22.5 x 19.5”. (HC) A superb map of Hungary, Romania and the Balkans dense with place names and topographical features. At bottom are two very graphic and historically interesting cartouches. Surrounding the title are scenes including a portrait of the king of Hungary, a soldier, the personification of Justice, river gods, and numerous putti each holding a herald representing the neighboring regions. Surrounding the distance scale is a group of men engaged in wine tasting, hunting and fishing. Nice impression and original color. There are a couple minor printer`s creases and a few light spots in the map. There is a minor damp stain in top and left blank margins that just enters map borders. (+B)

Balkans ([Lot of 2] Sclavonia, Croatia, Bosnia cum Dalmatiae Parte [and] Karstia, Carniola, Histria et Windorum Marchia), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1680. 19.4 x 15”. (BW) Two detailed maps of the Balkans, each of which includes a strapwork title cartouche that credits the map to Gerard Mercator. There is no text on back of either map, indicating they were issued after the demise of the great Blaeu publishing empire, as these were among the plates auctioned in 1677 following the fire that destroyed the printing house. A. Sclavonia, Croatia, Bosnia cum Dalmatiae Parte. The course of the Danube and its tributaries across the northwestern Balkans is the focus of this handsome map. It shows the political divisions of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Dalmatia and locates even the tiniest hamlets. The coats of arms of the Venetian Republic, Habsburg Monarchy, and Ottoman Empire reflect the power struggle that dominated this region. B. Karstia, Carniola, Histria et Windorum Marchia. A fine map of the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea and the Gulf of Venice, present-day northeastern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. Decorated with a title cartouche, compass rose, distance scale cartouche and a sailing ship. Both have a few faint spots with light foxing and paper has been added in blank margins to repair several chips. Backed with Japanese tissue. (+B)

Northern Italy (Dominio Veneto nell` Italia), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1640. 19.5 x 15”. (HC) This decorative map of the region of Veneto is roughtly centered on Venice and extending to Milan in the west. Numerous towns and cities are named, with larger cities illustrated with miniature bird`s-eye views. The extensive river system throughout the region is well depicted, in addition to the mountainous topography. Veneto`s coat of arms, depicting the lion of Saint Mark, is at top left, balanced by a distance scale cartouche surmounted by putti measuring a globe at top right. The map is further embellished by ships, a compass rose, and a decorative title cartouche featuring putti and a long ribbon listing the names of important towns in the region. French text on verso. Attractive color with wide margins, light toning, and a few unobtrusive spots. (+B)

Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (Tabula Geographica, in Qua Omnes Regiones, Urbes, Oppida, et Loca Describuntur, quorum mentio sit in Actis et Epistolis Apostolorum, et Apaocalypsi…), Plancius/Cloppenburg, Amsterdam, ca. 1643. 19.3 x 11.3”. (HC) This superb, graphic map of the eastern Mediterranean, from Rome to Babylon, depicts the spread of Christianity as reported in the Acts of the Apostles. This is the final map of the standard set of five Holy Land maps normally found in Dutch Bibles. The map is surrounded by fifteen Biblical vignettes including the apostles receiving heavenly inspiration, and the events of the Apocalypse as in the book of Revelations. The map includes a small inset of the whole Mediterranean region and is further decorated with a compass rose, sailing ship and strapwork distance scale. This is the second state with Plancius` name in the cartouche replaced by D.R.M. Mathes. Dutch text on verso, from a Dutch Bible published by Cloppenburg. Middle East (Carte de la Situation du Paradis Terrestre, Et des Pais Habitez par les Patriarches Dressee pour bien entendre l`Histoire Sainte, Par Messire Pierre Daniel Huet), Mortier, Nouvel atlas de la Bible…, Amsterdam, [1809]. 18.4 x 15.5”. (HC) This is a very uncommon version of Pierre Mortier`s map of the region from the Mediterranean through the Persian Gulf published by Jacques Desray. Detail is omitted in favor of small Biblical depictions engraved within the map, including the Sermon on the Mount, Babylon, the Garden of Eden, Noah`s Ark and others. Three tiny ships sail in the Persian Gulf and a pictorial scale of miles surmounted by a lion and a lamb with a serpent in an apple tree adorns the upper-left corner. Title is in both French and Dutch in panel at top. Watermarked paper. (A)

Holy Land (Terra Sancta, a Petro Laicstain Perlustrata, et ab eius Ore et Schedis a Christiano Schrot in Tabulam Redacta), Ortelius, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, [1598]. 20 x 14.5”. (HC) This striking map is considered the most `modern` of Ortelius` maps of the Holy Land. It is a very detailed map, centered on Samaria, with north oriented to the left. The map was drawn by Christian Schrot with cartography based on Peter Laicksteen`s wall map describing his 1566 visit to the Holy Land. The elaborate title cartouche incorporates vignettes of the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The map is further adorned with a bold distance scale featuring the head of Medusa and a dramatic scene depicting Jonah falling from a ship into the waiting jaws of the whale. French text on verso. Ref: Laor no.543; Nebenzahl (HL) plt. 31; Tooley (TMC-3, pp.28-31; Van den Broecke no.173. Wide margins with marginal soiling. Centerfold separations in top and bottom blank margins, along with a few short tears in blank margins, have been professionally repaired. Holy Land (Het Beloofde Landt Canaan door Wandelt van onsen Salichmaecker Iesu Christo, neffens syne Apostelen), Visscher, Amsterdam, ca. 1657. 19 x 12.5”. (HC) This fine map of present-day Israel is oriented with north to the right. There is a large, decorative title cartouche at bottom flanked by vignettes depicting the life of Christ. At top, putti hold banners with the key to the map and scale of miles. Tiny ships and the track of Apostle Paul are shown in the sea. Visscher`s trademark fishermen flank the vignettes at bottom - at left the younger Nicolas and at right the elder Claes Janszoon. Dutch text on verso. Ref: Laor no.791; Poortman & Augusteijn no.122. A nice impression and wide, original margins with a professionally repaired centerfold separation that just enters neatline at bottom. (A)

Northern Asia (Tartaria sive Magni Chami Imperium), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1635. 19.5 x 15”. (HC) This great map of Tartaria covers all of eastern Asia between the Caspian Sea and northern China and Manchuria. Being one of the most remote regions of Asia, it was among the last to be properly explored and mapped. This map combines the knowledge obtained by the English and Dutch explorers as far as the Ob River with the balance of the map based on the reports of Marco Polo and the Greek classics. The deserts are filled with a wild assortment of devils and dragons, being held at bay from China by the Great Wall. Explorers flank the distance scale and the title is symbolically engraved onto the saddle blanket of a camel, representing the trade over the Silk Road. This map is nearly identical to Jansson`s map of the same title, but includes a scale across the top. French text on verso. Old color with wide margins, light toning and a centerfold separation confined to the upper blank margin. There are a few short tears in blank margins, far from image. An ownership label is adhered to the lower right corner, well away from the image. (+B)

Eastern China (Huquang, Imperii Sinarum Provincia Septima), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1655. 19.3 x 16”. (HC) Based on the remarkably accurate compilations of the Jesuit Father Martino Martini during his travels between 1643 and 1650, this map of the Hubei province is centered on the Yangtze River, Kiang Flu Pars. A legend at bottom left illustrates towns of various sizes, forts, and the locations of silver mines. The city of Vuchang (Wuhan) is located along the river. A strapwork title cartouche incorporates the scale of miles and is flanked by two rice farmers. Lovely color and wide margins with uneven toning and light offsetting. (+B)

China, Korea & Japan (China Veteribus Sinarum Regio nunc Incolis Tame dicta), Jansson, Amsterdam, ca. 1636. 19.5 x 16.3”. (HC) Several large lakes dominate the topography of this elegantly engraved map of China. The Great Wall forms the northern boundary of China. The fictitious Chiamay Lacus is shown with numerous rivers flowing south into India and Siam. Korea is depicted as a strangely shaped island separated from the mainland by a narrow strait. Taiwan is located in a roughly correct position, named as both Pakan al I. Formosaand Tayoan The three main islands of Japan are shown on the Ortelius/Teixeira model. The map is richly embellished with European sailing ships and Chinese sampans, a decorative distance scale, and a title cartouche flanked by a Chinese man and woman. German text on verso. Clean, wide margins with light show-through of text on verso. There is a small, professionally repaired hole in bottom left blank margin and a tiny hole in top blank margin. (A)

East Indies - Indonesia (Insulae Iavae cum Parte Insularum Borneo Sumatrae, et Circumjacentium Insularum Novissima Delineatio), Jansson/Valck & Schenk, Amsterdam, ca. 1700. 20 x 16.5”. (HC) This elegant chart focuses on the island of Java with parts of Sumatra, Borneo and Bali. The lack of interior detail correctly reflects the state of knowledge of the period. The Dutch capital in the East Indies is located at Batavia (Jakarta) where a small fort is shown. The beautiful chart is richly embellished with two fine cartouches featuring natives and Chinese merchants flanking the title and Neptune and mermaids surrounding the scale of miles. Originally issued by Jan Jansson, this is the later re-issue by Gerard Valk and Peter Schenk. A couple of unobtrusive spots and light offsetting. (+B)

Madagascar (Isle d`Auphine, Communement Nommee par les Europeens Madagascar, et St. Laurens, et par les Habitans du Pays Madecase), Sanson, Paris, 1697. 17.5 x 23”. (BW) This is a splendid, large-scale map of Madagascar and the surrounding islands in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of Africa. The map is filled with detail along the coasts and is decorated with an unusual compass rose, sailing ship and a figurative cartouche with native inhabitants. The map is based on the report from two early French accounts of the islands; Etienne de Flacourt, a French governor of Madagascar in 1648 and Francois Cauche, who voyaged to Madagascar in 1638. Extended margins and backed with old linen. The map is detached at corners from the extended margins, and the linen is also detached at the corners. There are a few small spots and light creasing throughout, and light damp stains in corners. (+C)

(HC) Charming map of the legendary land of the Christian king, Prester John, with his fortified kingdom shown atop a mountain. The Nile River emanates from two large lakes near the Lunae Montes (Mountains of the Moon). The map is adorned with a large strapwork title and scale cartouche. Engraved by Petrus Kaerius. Latin text on verso. A few faint spots and light show-through of text on verso, with marginal soiling. (+B)

*Singre (Francois, Engineer, Inventor and Designer). A unique collection of original drawings, designs, design prints and blue-prints and related ephemera, in part comprising a group of original designs and drawings for a self-propelled `Voiture Electique` Car, variously dated 1889-1892, giving comprehensive specification plans for a battery-accumulator powered three-wheeled carriage giving exact dimensions and construction specification as well as projected Speeds and Journey durations at average speed and battery duration between charging etc, promoting a mean speed of 10-12kph and maximum of 15kph with a running time of 5-6 hours and distance covered between 60-70 kilometres per accumulator charge - the principal original drawing in Indian-ink on drafting paper signed inscribed and dated 5th April 1892, together with related original sketch designs, original prints and blue-prints. Also with a quantity of original artwork drawings for architectural & design examinations variously signed and dated 1844, later architectural and engineering drawings and designs including some for his own principal company Societe Anonyme de Transmission de la Force L`Electricite, for which various designs for Railway and Industrial Installations and inventions he was awarded the Medaille D`Or de L`Exposition Universelle 1889, with his original certificate of award included in this archive lot. Classically trained in architectural design, it is clear from an early stage that M. Singre developed his engineering skills from industrial buildings to explore the technical developments of the mid-Victorian age with especial interest in electricity as motive power. From the 1870s-1890s his company was designing large-scale industrial power-plants, railway buildings & installations, wagons, power-cranes and heavy loading equipment for use in marshalling-yards etc. A comprehensive group of further original designs, drawings plans and blueprints for all his other major industrial works is included in a further lot in the `Railways` section of this catalogue. *Singre (Francois, Engineer, Inventor and Designer). A unique archive collection of original drawings, designs, design prints and blue-prints and related ephemera, in part comprising a a significant group of major engineering designs for French Railway Companies during the middle and latter part of the 19th Century variously dated 1870s-1890s, drawings and designs including many from his own principal company Societe Anonyme de Transmission de la Force L`Electricite, for which various designs for Railway and Industrial Installations and inventions he was awarded the Medaille D`Or de L`Exposition Universelle 1889. This is a comprehensive quantity of original drawings, printed design specification sheets, blue-prints and related works including buildings, railway installations loading-cranes both steam and electricity generating plants, electrically powered, self-propelled railway-wagons, loading gantries and related marshalling-yard installations etc, all variously signed and dated 1870s-1890s. A group of architectural drawings is included by his son Alexandre who followed in his father`s footsteps at the turn of the 20th century, several elephant-size folios. Classically trained in architectural design, it is clear from an early stage that M. Singre developed his engineering skills from industrial buildings to explore the technical developments of the mid-Victorian age with especial interest in electricity as motive power. From the 1870s-1890s his company was designing large-scale industrial power-plants, railway buildings & installations, wagons, power-cranes and heavy loading equipment for use in marshalling-yards etc. A comprehensive group of further original designs, drawings plans and blueprints for his Electric Car designs of 1891 comprise an earlier lot in the Motoring Section of this catalogue. *WWI RFC/RAF - Pilot`s Flying Log-Book and related mementos to Lieutenant Herbert Alfred Denny (Flt Cadet 2nd Lieut) c. 1918. Joining the School of Military Aeronautics he underwent preliminary 6-week induction course during November/December 1917, and then transferred to further training at Thetford Aerodrome, whence the log book shows first flying entry dated 3rd May 1918 and continues until March 1919, covering all aspects of flights made, transition from dual-instruction to first solo flight dated 21st May 1918, and subsequent instructional training including Photography, Forced Landings, Stall-turns, Bombing and Ground Attack etc on various machines including DH6, RE8 and DH9 aeroplanes. He was transferred to the Western Front on 21st August 1918 and further entries include Reconnaissance, Line-Patrol, Dawn Patrol, and Raids etc. to Menin, Lille, Ypres, Armentieres, Courtrai, Couines, Quesnoy, and many other locations in the region where fighting was heaviest especially in the final weeks before the armistice, culminating with a last combat flight on 9th November 1918 a Raid on Lessines. Thereafter continuing with few flights during the winter of 1918/19, concluding with a final entry on 7th March 1919 with a Mail Flight to Cologne. In addition to the log-book, this lot includes a group of original aerial photographs taken by 206 Squadron over the Western Front, variously captioned and with printed map-references, and some hand-captioned verso, together with three captured enlarged original German Aerial photographs, and also with the pilot`s personal aerial maps and Ordnance Survey maps of North West Europe, Hazebrouck, Belgium & France, his knee-pad map-holder with fold-out large-scale map of the region, showing bullet-hole damage to lower edge, when shot at during a Raid. Further accoutrements include Training-Transfer Cards for the RAF dated Mar-July 1918, an original `Squadron Orders` sheet dated October 28th 1918, and two bombing-practice lead-weighted coloured cloth streamers (-)

Å Ronald Cameron, born 1930 The Diver bronze signed R Cameron variegated brown patination 210cm.; 83ins high This lot is sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by the sculptor stating that it is number 4 out of an edition of 4. Ronald Cameron was born in London in 1930 and studied at the Camberwell College of Art from 1947- 53. After working as a graphic artist he was asked to make the TV puppets for Gerry Anderson’s films of Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90, producing 60 heads in all. Commissions for soldiers and farm animals followed for Britain’s and Airfix, which in turn lead to work modelling miniature figures as promotional gifts for companies such as Kelloggs and Shell Oil, together with sports trophies for events like Batsman of the Year, won by Clive Lord and the Professional Snooker championship won by Steve Davis. Commercial success meant that in the 1980’s he was able to concentrate more on producing larger scale sculpture for commissions and galleries including the Alwin Gallery in Mayfair London, where his work was exhibited alongside works by Elisabeth Frink and Henry Moore. Other exhibitions and commissions included: Whitford Gallery in Duke St., St James’s, London; Three relief figures for the Athens Olympics; Giant Panda collection boxes commissioned by Sir Peter Scott for the World Wildlife Fund; Miniature figures for the Chapman brothers |Holocaust|; A Nude figure which won the sculpture prize in the 2002 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition; An over life size bust of the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Woolf for the National Portrait Gallery
