Roman Silvered Bronze Dolphin Brooch 2nd century AD. A D-section dolphin with dorsal and lateral fins, silver scale detail to the body, pin and catchplate to the reverse. 4.93 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1980s. Cf. Hattatt, R. Brooches of Antiquity, Oxford, 1987, item 1203. Fine condition.
Roman Bronze Articulated Shoulder Armour 3rd-4th century AD. A group of scales from a lorica squamata set of scale armour, each slightly curved in the vertical plane and pierced twice for lacing; two D-shaped plaques, five similar with two scoops to the lower edge, eight similar with three scoops. 40 grams total, 22-27mm (3/4 - 1"). English private collection; acquired in the 1970s. See the scale armour from the Roman fort at Dura Europos in James, S. Excavations at Dura Europos 1928-1937. A slightly convex discoid mirror with handle to the reverse formed as two vine leaves joined by a transverse bar with fish-scale detailing. 98 grams, 93mm (3 3/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. Fine condition.
Egyptian Silver Coiled Snake Ring Roman Period, 30 BC-323 AD. A cast D-section coiled band with scale detailing to the outer face, tail coiled and the finial a lozengiform snake-head with punched pellet eyes. 7.27 grams, 22mm overall, 16.61mm internal diameter (approximate size British L 1/2, USA 6, Europe 12.34, Japan 12) (1"). English private collection; acquired in the 1970s. Fine condition.

Violet Sells, later Mrs Whiteman (British, 1873-1952) Taffy, study of a dark bay pony signed lower right "Violet Sells 1908" and inscribed "Taffy" upper right oil on artist board 46 x 56cm (18 x 22in) Really quite dirty and loose in its frame. Areas of small scale flaking and loss. Uneven surface with matte patches. Layer of dirt present. A few scuffs and areas of abrasion . Frame has a few losses to gilding.

His son John succeeded him taking over the business and worked in the Holborn area until his death in 1799.Provenance: P.A. Oxley, Calne, sold to the vendor's father in 1993.
