His breakthrough came in 1963 when his work was exhibited to great acclaim at the Whitechapel Art Gallery where he showed large scale brightly painted abstract works which, in a radical dispensing of the plinth, stood directly on the ground. He explored a wide range of media in his work, and taught at St Martins School of Art from 1953-1981.

Remfry studied at the Hull College of Art 1959-1964 and held his first solo exhibition in London in 1973. His first show in the USA was at the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles, California in 1980. In 2002 he had a solo exhibition at MoMA PS1 Contemporary Center, Queens on Long Island. In the UK his work has been shown at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull; the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Other projects include designs for the launch of Stella McCartney’s fashion house, watercolours for Fortnum & Mason in London, and a portrait of Sir John Gielgud for the National Portrait Gallery. Remfry was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1987. He was awarded an MBE in 2001 for his commitment to British Art in America. In 2008 he was elected a Member of the Royal Academy. This work is in a mount and hinged across top edge. It is also in an unglazed framed. Examined under UV, no signs of restoration.

Peter Curling (b.1955) Irish "A Mistake by the Leader" Signed, oil on canvas, 74.5cm by 119.5cmProvenance: The Tryon Gallery Private Collection, Gloucestershire Unlined, fairly slack canvas over a strainer rather than a stretcher. Several small scale distortions to the canvas from blows/knocks from the reverse - see images in raking light. For example a diagonal line to the right of the top edge, above right of the jockey in purple's head, and in front of his mount's nose. All with minor/incipient cracking - secure. A couple of minor patches of brittle age craquelure along the top edge - secure and not elevated. No other damages or restoration evident. Light surface dirt and fibre stuck in paint. Varnish not appreciably yellowed. A few minor flyspotts and a slighly uneven surface gloss due to painting technique.
Edwin Ellis (1841-1895) "Under the East Cliff, Hastings" Signed and dated (18)70, oil on canvas, 49.5cm by 74.5cmThe artist exhibited a watercolour of the same in the Dudley Gallery in 1871, by repute Title by repute Unlined, two keys missing, a little lacking in tension. Series of indented horizontal lines across the top of the painting (see images in reflected light). It is not clear what has caused these. Bulge bottom left corner from debris trapped behind stretcher. Brittle age and drying craquelure throughout, appears to have been consolidated in the past. Currently flat and stable. Pentiments at the right, where the boats were originally in a larger scale, just visible where paint layers on top have become more transparent (see images uv). A few scattered losses and scratches - minor. Possibly a bit of abrasion, perhaps slightly suppressed by retouching in the sky. No other overpaint visible under UV. Old ingrained dirt and varnish in areas. Very glossy upper varnish layer. Light surface dirt.

In very good condition full colour with a scale 1 inch to 1 mile measures 9in x 6in which open out to 90in x 8.5in and complete with its original information booklet inside the rear cover. This company was renamed in 1839 to the L&SWR.
A Rare and Early 'Herbert Scott's Design' Electric Mantel Timepiece, circa 1910, bevelled glass case with a mirrored back panel, nickel plated uprights supported on a mahogany base, base with a front door containing two batteries which drive the movement, central pendulum bob with a flat block below a cylinder with engraved regulation scale, pendulum swings forwards and backwards over a pair of coils, 4-3/4-inch enamel dial with Arabic numerals44cm highThis early electromagnetic timepiece was first manufactured/marketed by the Ever Ready Company to a design by Herbert Scott which was patented in 1902. It is thought that only 500 pieces was made until the production stopped in 1912.Bevelled glass panels look clean, glass case with metal edges discoloured, base with some small scratches, dial with one very fine hairline crack from 12 position down to the dial centre, this crack is very difficult to see, movement now driven by two modern 1.5V batteries, movement has not been tested for its working condition.
