Lot 132

Attributed to Edwin Longsden Long, RA,  British 1829-1891- Portrait of a gentleman, possibly Lord Randolph Churchill, bust-length, wearing a ruff; oil on canvas, bears inscription 'E LONG 1829' on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 51 x 40.6 cm., (unframed). Provenance:  with T. M. Wilson Antiques, Bath (as 'Spanish subject', circa 1860);  where purchased by the present owner in 1980. Note:  The present work bears resemblance to the artist's large scale portrait of Lord Randolph Churchill (1849-1895), completed in 1888 and housed in London's National Portrait Gallery [NPG 5113]. We are grateful to Mark Bills for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.

Lot 172

George Lothian Hall,  British 1825-1888- Worms Head, Wales; watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'G L Hall. 1878' (lower left), bears inscription 'Wormshead' on the reverse of the frame, 54.2 x 100.8 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note:  Hall produced a number of large scale, dramatic coastal landscapes like the present work, which depicts the shore at Worms Head, a small island off the coast of Rhossili, in the south west of Wales. In this work, the artist's bold and extensive use of scratching out has effectively emphasised the spray produced by the crashing waves, and has also imparted the scene with a hazy, misty quality, which contrasts theatrically with the dark rocks above.

Lot 174

Edward Duncan, RWS,  British 1803-1882- The harvest field; pencil and watercolour heightened with white and scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'E. Duncan / 1860' (lower left), 20.4 x 50.4 cm. Provenance:  The Collection of Lord and Lady Weinstock. Note:  Despite being perhaps best-known as a marine watercolourist, Duncan produced a number of atmospheric rural landscapes like the present work. Here, the artist's use of a panoramic format enables him to effectively convey the vast scale of the scene, with woodland and fields stretching out into a hazy horizon, far beyond the small figures of the farm labourers and their haystacks which occupy the foreground.  Duncan was apprenticed to Robert Havell (1793-1878), who was a prominent printmaker and the principal aquatint engraver for John James Aubudon's (1785-1851) 'Birds of America'. Duncan's proximity with the Havell family brought him into contact with Robert's brother, the watercolourist William Havell (1782-1857), who had a significant influence on Duncan's output.

Lot 176

Francis Wheatley, RA,  British 1747-1801- Apple Gathering; pencil and brown wash on paper, signed 'F. Wheatly' (lower right), 19.5 x 25.2 cm. Provenance:  with The Bell Gallery, Belfast.  with The Fine Art Society, London, no.9585.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Wheatley was a hugely versatile artist, with an output which ranged from smaller-scale portraits and conversation scenes, often informed by the compositions of Johann Zoffany (1733-1810), to history paintings and landscapes which he moved towards later in his career. Idyllic pastoral scenes often form the subject of his works, with this drawing - a romanticisation of rural life in England or Ireland - a particularly charming example.

Lot 190

Albert Dürer Lucas,  British 1828-1918- Glencoe; pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed 'A.D. Lucas. AET: 74' (lower left), dated '1903' (lower right), and titled 'Glencoe' (lower edge), 14.3 x 19.1 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Lucas is known for his still lifes and landscapes, which are characterised by a sense of wildness and informality, alongside a close attention to detail. In the present work Lucas has contrasted the vast scale of the mountains with the diminutive form of an eagle attacking a snake, which is just visible in the foreground, which, alongside exhibiting the artist's skill, also adds an element of theatricality and threat into an otherwise charming and placid landscape.

Lot 205

Francesco Citterio,  Italian fl.c.1820-c.1830- Milan Cathedral; watercolour and bodycolour heightened with white over some etched line with aquatint on paper, 40.8 x 55.6 cm. Provenance:  with the Rowley Gallery, London.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work depicts the magnificent, instantly recognisable façade of Milan Cathedral, and highlights its immense scale as the largest church in the Italian Republic and among the largest churches in the world. The artist has been generous in his application of bright colour, particularly in the vibrant reds and yellows of the costumes of the staffage which surround the cathedral, and in the cloudless blue sky against which the building is set.  Citterio produced prints of various views of the interior and exterior of Milan Cathedral, alongside his etchings of sights across northern Italy, particularly in Milan, Turin, and Venice.

Lot 240

Pierre Édouard Frère,  French 1819-1886- A young boy building a house of cards in the artist's studio; oil on panel, signed and dated 'Édouard Frère 1867' (lower left), bears old hand-written label inscribed with a quote from Ruskin attached to the reverse, 25 x 20 cm. Provenance:  with Mitchell Galleries, St James's, London.  where purchased in 1954. Note:  The note attached to the reverse recalls John Ruskin's (1819-1900) praise of Frère, reading: 'I cannot tell how I am ever to say what / I want to say about Frere's pictures. / I can find no words tender enough / nor reverent enough. / They are all beauty without conscious- / ness, dignity without pride lowliness / without sorrow and religious without / fear / (Ruskin)'.  Frère attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and studied under Paul Delaroche (1797-1856). Small-scale and intimate interior scenes like the present work are characteristic of his oeuvre, with his depiction of children imparting such works with a sense of innocence and sweetness which renders them particularly endearing.

Lot 273

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville,  French 1835-1885- Le déserteur; oil on panel, indistinctly inscribed and signed 'de Neuville' (lower left), titled and further signed 'Le déserteur / A. de Neuville' verso, 12.7 x 9.6 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  De Neuville studied under Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) and was undoubtedly influenced by his highly dramatic scenes. De Neuville, however, focused principally on military subjects, with depictions of the Crimean War (1853-1856), the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and the Anglo-Zulu War (1879) making up much of his oeuvre. Instead of painting large-scale panoramas of battle, de Neuville typically portrayed snippets of action, or, perhaps more frequently, of rest, which imparted his works with a greater sense of realism by conveying the everyday moments of mundanity that occur within the heat of battle.

Lot 351

Frederick Edward Joseph Goff,  British, 1855-1931- Windsor; and Cheapside; each pencil, pen and black ink and watercolour heightened with touches of white on paper, the first signed and inscribed 'Windsor / Fred E. J. Goff.' (lower right), the second 'signed and inscribed 'Cheapside / Fred. E.J. Goff' (lower left), each 10.9 x 14.7 cm., two (2). Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Goff specialised in painting views of late Victorian London in watercolour on a small scale. He used a magnifying glass whilst painting, allowing him to skillfully capture architectural subjects in minute detail. Indeed, his depictions of the sights of many famous scenes of London and its environs earned him a respected reputation during his lifetime. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New Watercolour Society, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Glasgow Institute of Art.

Lot 47

Circle of Gerard Hoet,  Dutch 1648-1743- Bacchus discovering the sleeping Ariadne; oil on canvas, 58 x 67 cm., (unframed). Note:  The present lot shows a scene from the myth of Bacchus and Ariadne, in which the Roman god discovers Ariadne asleep on the island of Naxos after she has been abandoned there by Theseus. The picture's composition and the soft modelling of the central figures strongly recall the small-scale mythological scenes painted by Gerard Hoet and his followers as commissions for wealthy clients during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Hoet co-founded a drawing academy together with the flower painter Hendrik Schoock (1630-1707) in Utrecht in 1697. He travelled extensively across Europe, including France and Flanders, and his international influences can be discerned in his landscapes and vividly coloured skies.

Lot 6

Circle of Francesco Furini,  Italian 1603-1646- Portrait of a young woman, head and shoulders, adorned with pearls; oil on canvas fragment, bears ink stamp for the National Gallery of Prague 'Narodni Galerie, vývoz' ('National Gallery, export') verso, 40.5 x 41.5 cm., (unframed). Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note: Francesco Furini and his Roman followers were renowned for their bust-length, sensuous depictions of young women, often painted on a small scale as commissions for private clients. An example of this style of portraiture by Furini, which, like the present lot, shows a young woman adorned with pearls, is in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna [no.GG 5785].
