George Chinnery RHA (Tipperary 1774-1852 Macau)A view of Macau looking towards the gardens of the Casa, with figures in the foreground, oil on canvas, unlined31 x 46.4cm (12 3/16 x 18 1/4in).Footnotes:ProvenanceCollection of the Viscounts Strathallan, Strathallan Castle, Auchterarder, Scotland before 1910Collection of Sir James Roberts, and thence by descent The present view appears to be taken from a high point above the inner harbour at Macau looking towards the gardens of the Casa (see footnote to the following lot). The pitched roof of the Grotto of Camoes is visible among the trees of the Casa gardens in the middle distance. Chinnery had travelled from London to Madras in 1802 leaving behind his wife and two young children. He established himself as a society portraitist spending periods in Calcutta, Dacca and Serampore before moving to Macau in 1825. Although much of his output in oils consists of portraits it is clear from the many sketches he made that landscape, often incorporating local tradespeople, was one of his primary interests. However landscape paintings on the scale of the present work are rare, and this important panoramic view gives us a new perspective on the layout of Macau in the second quarter of the 19th century. The peninsula of Macau lies 40 miles west of Hong Kong and south of Canton on the estuary of the Pearl River. In 1556 the Portuguese established a trading base there giving them direct access into China and Japan. As trade flourished Macau grew, with the noticeable introduction of European architecture, baroque churches and convents, many of which still stand today. By the second quarter of the 17th century the Dutch and British were also staking a claim to trade in the east and by the end of the 18th century the British East India Company was effectively the most significant trading entity on the peninsula. Western merchants trading with Canton 80 miles away made Macau their residential base; they were permitted to live in Canton only during the annual winter trading season, while their families were not allowed there at all, so most of them stationed themselves at Macau. Macau's trading dominance began to wane in the middle of the 19th century when Hong Kong became a British colony in 1841 and with its large natural harbour, took over as the main trading hub in the South China seas. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze figure of Venus (Greek Aphrodite), her hair elaborately dressed with ringlets to the shoulders, with bun and long braids falling over them, naked from hips up, her left covering the breast and the right hand the pubis holding a loosely draped cloak (chlamys) around her hips exposing buttocks and pudendum, standing upon a circular pedestal, decorated with concentric circles. See for similar typology Rolland, H. Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 76. 310 grams, 14cm (5 1/2"). Property of a South London collector; previously acquired on the European art market 1970-1980. Venus was one of the most popular deities to be represented in small scale sculpture for centuries across the Mediterranean world, and one of the most common to be found in household shrines. The goddess was not only associated with love, but also with fertility in both humans and nature, and was regarded as a protector of the crops under her Etruscan name of Turan. At the beginning she was even associated with the war and very often represented with a spear in hand. She was also considered to be a mother goddess who protected her devotees under the name of Venus Genetrix. According the Greco-Roman mythology she was the mother of Aeneas, the Trojan hero from whom Julius Caesar claimed descent, and was thus the progenitor of the whole Julio-Claudian dynasty. Very fine condition.

This was the age when the Dutch Republic was a major European trading power and dominated the oceans through the VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) and the WIC (West-Indische Compagnie). Not only trade flourished, but also art, science and a combination of the two, cartography. Of the cartographers and sea atlas publishers working in Amsterdam in the second half of the seventeenth century, Hendrik Doncker’s atlases were regarded as of particularly high quality. He was known to carefully and constantly revise his work and did not rely on previously published maps. The first Doncker chart shows the West Coast of Africa, from the Equator to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Agulhas. It also includes an inset of the coast from St. Martin’s Bay (Velddrif/ Paternoster area) to the Cape of Good Hope. The map of the East Coast of Africa, in smaller scale, overlaps the other and the coastline starts at Monte dos Bramides, rounds southern Africa and continues up the coast to the Horn of Africa. It also includes Arabia, the Malabar Coast of India and Madagascar. Both maps use the Mercator projection with vertical meridians. The bar scales include Dutch, Spanish and French and English miles. The charts are crisscrossed with rhumb lines meeting at central points, with some adorned with compass roses. On the compass roses a fleur-de-lis points North and there is a Christian cross pointing East, denoting the position of Jerusalem in relation to Europe. The title of cartouche on the western chart is surrounded by depictions of the inhabitants of the area holding a sounding lead, a cross staff and a chart, all navigation tools of the period. Another decorative element on this chart is the depiction of Dutch East Indiamen sailing in the Atlantic. The eastern chart’s cartouche is decorated with a tortoise, lizards, snakes, and surmounted by an open winged bat. - L.R.Howse, Derek, The Sea Chart: An Historical Survey Based on the Collections in the National Maritime Museum, New York: McGraw-Hill, 1973
