Early, 'floor-start' Austin Seven Mini exported to California in the 1980s and repatriated by Mike Brewer.849 XVM is a May 1961 Austin Seven despatched new to Swain and Jones in SurreyIt was originally Speedwell Blue with a Blue/Grey interior and appears to have been changed to a bright red with a white roof in the seventiesPart of regular Brighton Run entrant, Phil Reed's collection in CaliforniaBy pure coincidence, Mike Brewer was viewing the collection after Phil Reed passed away and purchased both this Mini and John Cooper's 1275SNow UK registered and refreshed ready for the saleOn its introduction in August 1959, the Mini was marketed under both Austin and Morris names as the Austin Se7en and Morris Mini-Minor, such was the brand-loyalty to the formerly divided companies, still displayed by customers. The Austin Se7en was renamed the Mini in 1962.849 XVM is a May 1961 Austin Seven despatched new to dealers Swain and Jones in Farnham. From the records it appears it was originally finished in Speedwell Blue with a Blue/Grey interior but is now resplendent in bright red with a white roof and red cloth upholstery. The time scale is not clear but it seems the car was fully restored in the UK in the late 70s.Phil Reed was a Californian motor enthusiast and enjoyed a small private collection at home. He was also a Brighton Run entrant and competed regularly despite the fact that he lived 5,000 miles from Brighton. On one of his visits, we assume that he discovered this early Mini at a dealers in Brighton, purchased it and shipped it back to California in the early 80s. When Phil sadly passed away recently, his collection was left to his two sons who didn't share their dad's passion and invited interested parties to have a look. Coincidentally, Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer was filming in the area and went along. There he discovered a 1275S Mini Cooper that had been used by John Cooper himself which he subsequently bought and is on offer in today's sale but, additionally, was rather taken with EVM which he simply couldn't leave behind, so that was also purchased and shipped back to the UK.It's now UK registered and has been refreshed for the sale. It's featured in Mini Magazine (February 2021) and a copy of that is with the car. There is little history with the car, save for import documents and the fact that its Mikes, but what a super little '61 'Min'.   SpecificationMake: AUSTINModel: SEVEN 'MINI'Year: 1961Chassis Number: A257106251Registration Number: 849 XVMTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 8/AMU-H156896Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 22272 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Red Click here for more details and images

An original ex-Metropolitan Police Daimler Dart, a rare survivor and restored to a Concours standard.550 CLU is one of only 26 Daimler Darts supplied to the Metropolitan PoliceIt’s had a full nut and bolt restoration to Concours standards and is a multi-award winnerFull photographic details of the restoration are contained in the history fileThe die cast 1/43rd scale model made by Oxford is of this actual car and number plateSupplied with the car is an original Owners' Handbook, Supplement of Accessories, period photographs of the car in service, newspaper clips, V5C and old MOTs and tax discs etcThis Daimler is a must for any collector/investor and needs to be viewed to fully appreciate the finish and detail that has gone into its fastidious restoration. An unusual departure for a firm more noted for its stately limousines, the SP250 sports car was Daimler's final fling before its acquisition by Jaguar. Aimed at the North American market and launched in 1959, the SP250 (originally entitled Dart) employed a separate ladder-type chassis on which sat controversially-styled fibreglass coachwork manufactured by Daimler themselves. Four-wheel disc brakes were an unusual feature at the time but unquestionably the car's biggest virtue was its magnificent 2.5-litre V8 engine. An outstandingly flexible unit, the smaller of Daimler's two Edward Turner designed V8s produced 140bhp, an output good enough to propel the SP250 to a top speed of 125mph. In keeping with the demands of its intended market, automatic transmission was available as an option. In the late 1950s, the Metropolitan Police had a major problem with, what were called, 'café racers'. Groups of youths on motorbikes would gather together at a local café, put a record on the jukebox and then race their bikes along a set course getting back to the café before the record had stopped playing. Accidents occurred and in an attempt to put a stop to the practice, the Met’s proposal was to have a fast car that could actually catch the bikers. The existing fleet of Wolseley saloons was not up to the task so they looked instead at sports cars. The Daimler SP250 Dart was the answer! This had a 2.5-litre lightweight V8 engine and was capable of 125 mph and 0-60 in 10 seconds, which for 1959 was remarkable. The Met bought 26 Darts between 1961 and 1964 and soon got them into service to be used as high-speed pursuit cars based at separate Traffic Garages situated over the London area. The results were impressive with many speeding bikers being caught and the number of fatal road accidents dropped. Unlike today, the idea then was that you see a Police car and thereby slow down...no stealth tactics for these boys.Borg-Warner Model 8 3-speed automatic cars destined for Police use were modified by Daimler with the fitting of a handle in the centre of the dashboard which, when pulled, locks the gearbox into second gear allowing a speed range from zero to 85 mph in a single gear. The gearbox normally runs in two gears only, with a ‘low’ ratio for manual selection if required and the slightly higher gearing resulted in an increased top speed compared to manual gearbox cars. The Metropolitan Police found this to be better for town work and high speed chases, and it was also found to be more economical, avoiding the clutch wear that a manual car would develop with usage between 18 and 24 hours a day.Traffic police in Bristol, Cambridge, Liverpool, Manchester, Southend and Surrey also used the SP250 for speed enforcement, as did police forces in Australia and New Zealand. After the opening of the first section of the M1 in 1959, the Bedfordshire police used the SP250 for motorway patrol prior to the arrival of the 70mph limit in 1965.The sparkling example on offer here, 550 CLU, was registered with the Metropolitan Police on 1st June 1961 as Fleet Number 240T. It bears Engine No.96223, Chassis No.102820 and was fitted with the optional Borg-Warner DG. Automatic gearbox, an AT Head Calibrated Speedometer and Pye Radio equipmentThe Met disposed of 550 CLU on 30th August 1967, having been driven 97,325 miles in less than five years and it was sold on to a Mr Killamsy of 2 Winter Street, London SW11. (Copy record in file). It was subsequently purchased by Claude Kearley, President of the Daimler SP250 Owners Club (2007-2009) who commenced a photo-documented restoration including engine, gearbox and drive train to Concours standards. It became our vendor’s property in 2016 and has been much enjoyed ever since, taking part in all sorts of events and is a multi-award winner including 2nd place in the 2017 East Coast Run and 1st Place, Sledmere 2017. It’s been an NEC exhibit three years running and was to be an entrant in Zoute Concours d ’Elegance prior to the COVID lockdown. When ‘Oxford Diecast’ chose to model a Police SP250 for their 1/43 scale range, 550 CLU was the chosen car.Supplied with the car are its V5C and previous ownership docs, a copy of the Met Historic Fleet Disposal Records, period copy photographs of actual use when in service, press cuttings, photos of surviving drivers (at 2013), MOTs, Owners’ Manual, Accessories Manual and more. This Daimler is a must for any collector/investor and needs to be viewed to fully appreciate the finish and detail that has gone into its fastidious restoration.Obviously this immaculate Dart can be enjoyed in much the same way that we all enjoy our classic cars but, in addition, it’s regularly in demand for meets and shows and would be welcome at events run by the Daimler and Lanchester Owners Club, the Daimler Dart Owners Club, the Police Vehicle Club and naturally local County Shows and Village Fetes. If that’s what you have in mind, this rare sixties classic could keep you busy for the rest of your days.SpecificationMake: DAIMLERModel: SP250 (DART)Year: 1960Chassis Number: 102820Registration Number: 550 CLUTransmission: AutoEngine Number: 96223 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 74590 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images

Wooden scabbard, covered with velvet (completely worn) with fantastic, gilded bronze mounts. Cap with a scene in which a group of characters is worshiping an idol (a sort of ape demonic figure) placed on a column: in the center and on the right three ladies in classical period dress, one of which kneeling, on the left two male characters, one with a helmet, the other with a long beard and conical hat, under all the characters a crouching lion, the bottom of the cap with a big mask. Back part of the cap engraved with lozenges, with a big cross and provided with a loop, festooned border and engraved with leaves. Back of chape carved with floral motifs. This fantastic dagger shows many details found on works by Hans Holbein the Elder (Augsburg, 1460 - Issenheim, 1524). See a series of Swiss daggers in the Wallace Collection, illustrated in 'European Arms and Armor - Volume II Arms' on plate 137 which contain various resembles with ours, such as the pommel of the A 768 dagger, the chapes of A 769 and A 770 and the drawing of the cap of A 768 (found in our dagger on the back part). The stamp on the blade is very similar to the stamps of the A 768, and vaguely recalls also those of the A 769 and A 770. See also the very similar knife and awl in the dagger kept in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which also shows similarities with ours on the chape and decoration engraved on the cap. Also the subject of the decorative elements of this dagger is of extreme interest, as the suggested theme is not only pagan, but esoteric: The main image, in fact, that is the scene on the cap, is an explicit esoteric reference, in which the idol worshiped on the column is probably Lucifer himself, portrayed inside a building, in a niche under a canopy (Lucifer, bearer of Light, does not need the light of the sun, since he himself is the light), depicted with monstrous features in the act of spreading his arms holding a scepter and (probably) a cornucopia. On his right he is in fact worshiped by ladies, on the left by a bearded man in the act of swearing, and by a man wearing a helmet pointing (or throwing) a torch (or a scale) to the ground. Pommel with button as two-faced female figure can recall the myth of Janus, who sees the future and the past. The naked figures on the grip can also be interpreted as sacrificial victims tied by straps to an altar. The back of the cap bears the effigy of a large crucifix, but this has engraved arms so that each element has both a light and a dark side, and the foliage at the base of the cap can also be interpreted as flames. The depiction of Hermes, messenger of the gods but also god of writing and Magic. Quillon block bears Pan's heads, obviously also assimilated to the iconography of the Devil. An extraordinary dagger that deserves an adequate study of its unique characteristics. Museum restorations. length 38,2 cm.

HERMAN MAKKINK (Dutch, 1937-2013)Rocking Machine, Gold Edition, 2021No.1 from an edition of 2 and 1 AP, from the original mould designed by Herman Makkink, numbered HMFMRM-G-2021-01, composed of gold lacquered fibreglass and acrylic, with internal kinetic steel mechanism enabling rocking motion, together with a certificate of authenticity from the Herman Makkink Estate, 76 x 35 x 45cm (30 x 13 3/4 x 17 3/4in)Footnotes:In tribute to the 50th Anniversary since the release of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, the Estate of Herman Makkink has produced a small edition of 2 (with an Artist Proof) of his infamous Rocking Machine sculpture. A scale model made from Makkink's original mould, identical to the one used in the 1971 production. Instead of finished in white, this one covered in gold lacquer, together with the internal kinetic rocking mechanism, designed like the original. This edition has not been offered at auction before and this sculpture has been produced specially for the 2021 Bonhams 'Pop X Culture' sale. Herman Makkink was a Dutch sculpture and artist who created the Rocking Machine in 1969 (as an edition of 6) which he exhibited at S.P.A.C.E complex located in London's St Katherine's Dock. A work that was discovered by Stanley Kubrick who was scouting out young artists at the time for his film. Makkink has said 'We didn't want to fight the establishment so much as shock them. Pop Art was in full swing and so was the sexual revolution, so I combined a penis with a beautifully shaped female rear in fibre glass. I thought this would be really shocking. I thought I could make the object move by constructing a heavy pendulum swing inside. To my surprise I found that it made an irregular movement, so I exaggerated that by adding extra weights in various places. That resulted in Rocking Machine's specific, jerky motion.' - Herman Makkink (© 2000 Drencrom V.O.F.) On seeing the scandalous phallus he worked with Makkink to use the sculpture in his film rendition of Antony Burgess book A Clockwork Orange. The sculpture was used as a weapon in one of the most appalling scenes in film history at the time, when the film's protagonist 'Alex' played by Malcolm McDowell used it to murder 'Catlady' in cold blood. This disturbing act propelled Makkink's Rocking Machine to iconic status and it remains as such. Very few original pieces of memorabilia from the film have ever been offered at auction. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
