A Victorian Naval General Service Medal, awarded to William Martin, Midshipman, with Trafalgar clasp, and English School (c.1810), PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM MARTIN, IN HIS NAVAL UNIFORM, 6cm, together with a photograph of him in old age wearing his medal (3) William Martin was a midshipman aboard HMS Minotaur at the Battle of Trafalgar, which played a significant role in protecting Nelson's flagship Victory during the battle. The Battle of Trafalgar was the greatest naval action of the Napoleonic era. Fought on 21 October 1805, twenty-seven ships led by Admiral Lord Nelson defeated thirty-three French and Spanish ships. The HMS Minotaur, was a seventy-four gun third-rate ship. At the end of Nelson's windward squadron, with the Spartiate astern, they approached the enemy fleet at right angles, and entered the battle at a pivotal moment when the main British force had engaged the enemy fleet. It defended the HMS Victory against the counter attack by Rear Admiral Dumanoir's squadron and was instrumental in capturing the Spanish ship, Neptuno. William Martin was born on 3 December 1783 at Glanmire, Co. Cork, Ireland, and was the third son of Thomas Martin Esq. of Springmount. He entered the navy on 15 October 1799 under Capt. Charles John Moore Mansfield on HMS Dryad and in June 1802 transferred to HMS Hercule under Capt. Solomon Ferris. Rejoining Capt. Mansfield in 1803 on board HMS Minotaur, he witnessed the surrender of the French frigate, La Franchise. Further in his naval career he served in the Philippines, where aboard HMS Lion he was involved in an attack by over two hundred pirates. Aboard HMS Ardent in Bermuda he was the only member of the ship's crew to scale mast during a violent storm. He worked with the Governor of Newfoundland, Sir Charles Hamilton, sailing the HMS Clinker in the Northern Territories to explore and communicate with isolated missionaries and Eskimos. Extracted from 'Byrnes Naval History'.
