Koeman Mor 1, but with vol. 2 title here dated 1700], folio (605 x 480mm.), Paris, Hubert Jaillot, 1696 [but Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1700]Footnotes:A COLOURED COPY of the Sanson/Jaillot/Mortier atlas. At the close of the seventeenth century, Sanson's plates were purchased by the influential cartographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot, who joined Sanson's heirs in the production of this atlas, which first appeared in 1681. Pierre (or Pieter) Mortier was born in Amsterdam, but lived and worked in Paris for various cartographical publishers from 1681 to 1685. On his return to Amsterdam, according to Koeman, 'His knowledge of modern French cartography led him to copying the maps by Sanson, published by Jaillot.'The present copy is near complete, wanting only the map of Namur called for on the list of tables and maps. It was issued without the small plans and views of cities sometimes found in this edition. It includes a World map (Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique) showing California as an island, and parts of New Zealand and Australia. 'The two hemispheres are drawn on an enlarged scale, engraved with distinction, and usually printed on heavy quality paper. The limited decoration enhances the overall effect: at the top cherubs with flowing banners are seated astride dolphins and support the arms of France. At the bottom a bold cartouche is flanked by two twin-tailed mermen' (see Shirley 462 fourth plate, state 3).In addition, there are several maps of America: 'Carte particuliere de l'Amerique septentrionale' (Hudson's Bay), 'Carte nouvelle de l'Amerique angloise', 'Carte particuliere de Virginie, Maryland, Pennsilvanie ...', 'Carte general de la Caroline', 'Carte particuliere de la Caroline', 'Carte particuliere de Isthmus ou Darien qui comprend le Golfe du Panama', and 'Le Golfe de Mexique'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A Victorian sculpted terracotta relief by George Tinworth for Doulton & Co, Lambeth, Gethsemane, circa 1880, rectangular, the figures modelled in the round and in high relief, extensively inscribed with verse, inscribed H. Doulton & Co Lambeth, G Tinworth Sc.; within a green velvet lined mount, later framed and glazed, the relief 14cm high, 32cm wide; the overall dimensions 32cm high, 50cm wideTinworth exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1866 and 1885; in 1875 he showed a series of small terracotta panels depicting religious scenes, which were praised by the critic John Ruskin and resulted in his commission for the Crucifixion reredos at York MinsterIn Marion Harry Spielmann, British Sculpture and Sculptors of Today, 1901, Pp 22-24 , she finely encapsulates the spirit of Tinworth's religious reliefs thus:'Apart from the legitimate designs for pottery and the like, dramatic high-relief panels with numerous figures on a small scale have absorbed the energies of Mr. Tinworth. The popularity of these is out of all proportion to their sculptural merits; yet it cannot be denied that in the spirit that inspires them, and in the deep religious sentiment with which they overflow, there is ample justification tor the public favour. Not for their art's sake, but for the vivid drama and intense passion with which the subjects are presented, they go straight to the heart of the devout or the unsophisticated spectator. They are often rugged in their force; naif, almost primitive, in their conception and handling; and so sincere that we are restrained from an occasional smile at the archaism and the treatment by the perfect sincerity of the modeller...'Condition Report: The relief bears the very minor marks knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use.The modelling is loose in places, commensurate with the design of the work. There is a small loss of light wash to the upper right corner, where the underlying colour of terracotta shines through. There is a short and fine hairline crack to the lower right edge of the relief, possibly a firing crack. Some minor scuffing and denting to the frame. This work has not been inspected outside of its frame.Condition Report Disclaimer
