A 19th Century Mahogany cased Wheel Barometer A Taroni LLanelly, dry/damp dial (pointer missing), over central twin scale, replacement swan neck pediment, central urn finial, satin wood line inlaid case, 42” high Condition: Pediment later, hand missing from dry/damp, colour worn from frame around thermometer and bulb of tube broken, bezel around face lacking most of gilding, button below face held on by tape, also front has crack running between top dials and mirror also down from mirror to face. Amsterdam, c.1640, hand coloured engraved map of Virginia, orientated to the west, strapwork cartouche and mileage scale, two engraved vignettes, 380 x 485mm, Latin text on verso. P.Burden. The Mapping of North America, no.193, state 2. Published in `Le Theatre du Monde` between 1638 and 1658. The map was first issued as a separately published map by Jodocus Hondius from 1618-1629 and is derived from John Smith`s map of Virginia of 1612. Upon Hondius`s death in 1629, Blaeu purchased the plate and the imprint was changed to reflect the new ownership. Blaeu used the map in virtually every edition of his atlas. (1)

This volume was probably his own copy as it bears the bookplate of his son Edward Strutt (1801-1880) who became the 1st Baron Belper. Edward Strutt was a British Liberal Party politician, who served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1852 to 1854 under Lord Aberdeen. (1)
