Ï’A fine and rare George III mahogany mercury mountain stick barometer, Dollond, London, late 18th century The slender square section mahogany case comprising full-height lift-off front section secured by sprung clasps to the sides, the interior with slender silvered brass Vernier scale calibrated in barometric inches from 17 inches to over 32 inches divided into twentieths and annotated 18-32 to right hand margin, the left hand side with engraved signature Dollond, London over glass tube terminating with a cylindrical glass cistern with fixed ivory stopper to upper edge and threaded ivory tube-height adjustment screw to base engaging with a decoratively-turned threaded eye secured via an adjustable slide to the rear of the case, the exterior with chamfered slot behind the scale for viewing the tube from the rear, 98.5cm (38.75ins) high. Provenance: Private collection Hampshire (ref. B30); purchased from Asprey, London, 16th December 1987 for £1,500. Peter Dollond is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1680-1860 as born 1730 and died 1820. He was the son of John Dollond, a Huguenot silk weaver and started business as an optician in 1750. He was joined by his father in 1752 until his death in 1761, and then by his brother, John, until his death in 1804. The family business was continued by Peter Dollond's nephew, George Huggins, who changed his name to Dollond. George Dollond became instrument maker to William IV and Queen Victoria, exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and died 1856.Soon after the invention of the barometer in the 17th century it was observed that air pressure decreased with altitude. However, it was not until the latter part of the 18th century before an accurate mathematical relationship between height and drop in air pressure had been devised allowing barometers to be made with the intention of measuring altitude. The current lot is of relatively lightweight construction and the design of the cistern allows a degree of portability. This, coupled with the elongated scale (potentially allowing a range of around 15,000 feet to be observed), indicates that the instrument was clearly designed for mountain use and as such is a relatively early example of a mercury barometer made for this purpose. Ï’  Indicates that this lot may be subject to CITES regulations when exported. Please see our Terms & Conditions for more information.

Lot 42

A rare Swiss electroplated aneroid pocket barometer compendium with altimeter, thermometer and compass, the register inscribed for E. Benzoni, Geneva, late 19th century The circular fired white enamel register with outer scale calibrated 34 to 80 for barometric pressure divided into tenths, the inner scale calibrated in reverse to 0-5,000 for altitude in feet and the centre signed E. BENZONI, GENEVE, in cylindrical plated brass case incorporating gilt on oxidised brass dial engraved with central compass rose with steel needle within raised silvered ring engraved in degrees calibrated 0 to 360 with every degree annotated, the outer margin with curved mercury tube CENTIGRADE thermometer set behing shallow convex glass with compass needle locking lever to circumference, the case with suspension ring to top and measuring 5cm (2ins) approx.; in original blue velvet and silk lined leather covered case. E. Benzoni of Geneva does not appear to be recorded in the usual sources however the inscription may well be that of the retailer of the current lot rather than the actual maker. The calibration for altitude being in reverse is highly unusual as is the barometric scale which to the best of the cataloguers knowledge does not appear to conform to any of the multitude of conventional units used for barometric pressure.

Lot 45

A brass aneroid desk barometer with thermometer, Troughton and Simms, London, late 19th century The 4.25 inch circular silvered register with curved mercury tube Fahrenheit scale thermometer to the recessed centre inscribed Troughton & Simms, LONDON, within concentric scale calibrated for barometric inches calibrated 14 to 32 divided into fiftieths, set within brass drum case with bevelled front glass incorporating brass recording pointer and with suspension ring, 12cm (4.75ins) diameter; the whole supported on a foliate scroll carved oak cradle desk stand incorporating out swept knurled feet, 20cm (8ins) wide. Edward died in 1835 followed by William in 1860; the business was subsequently continued by their successors until 1922 when the name was changed to Cooke, Troughton and Simms.

The presence of the Railway Approach address within the gilt on silk trade label to the interior of the lid of the current lot would indicate a date of around 1890. Ï’  Indicates that this lot may be subject to CITES regulations when exported. Please see our Terms & Conditions for more information.

Lot 74

A George I eight-day longcase clock movement with lunar calendar, Edward Cockey, Warminster, circa 1720 The five finned pillar movement with anchor escapement for regulation by a seconds pendulum and inside countwheel hour striking on a bell mounted above the plates, the 12 inch brass break-arch dial with calendar aperture and subsidiary seconds dial to the basket of flowers, Ho-Ho bird and fruiting trail bright-cut engraved and chased matted centre within applied Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised fleur-de-lys half hour markers, Arabic five minutes to outer track and signed Edward, Cockey, WARMINSTER to lower edge, the angles applied with female mask and scroll cast gilt spandrels within a herringbone engraved border, the arch with rosette engraved centre incorporating circular aperture to reveal a lunar disc representation of the age of the moon and steel pointer for the fixed silvered outer scale calibrated for the lunar month and flanked by dolphin and foliate cast gilt mounts within conforming herringbone surround, 42cm (16.25 ins) high. Born in 1669, Edward Cockey senior was the son of Lewis Cockey (a bellfounder and clockmaker working in Warminster) from whom it is believed that he subsequently learned the trade. Edward was clearly a talented and well-connected clockmaker who in 1707 made an extremely complicated astronomical clock for lord Weymouth for the Great Hall at Longleat. Weymouth is thought to have subsequently commissioned Cockey to make another example as a gift to Queen Anne for her drawing room at St. James`s Palace (now in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich). Edward Cockey junior was born in 1701 and, although initially thought to have followed in his father`s footsteps, apparently chose to become a wine merchant instead. There is a record of the death of an Edward Cockey clockmaker in 1768 (which probably relates to Edward junior). The dial of the current lot, with decorated centre and lunar calendar to arch exhibits Edward Cockey`s individual and innovative approach to both function and aesthetic quality.
