Provenienz: Aus Familienbesitz. Albert Speer - design sketches for the Reichstag Chancellery at the "Großer Platz in Berlin" and for the large axis (tr.) "The quarter of museums and theatres", 1942 Albert Speer - design sketches for the Reichstag Chancellery at the "Großer Platz in Berlin" and for the large axis (tr.) "The quarter of museums and theatres", 1942Design sketch of the north-eastern part of the buildings at the "Großer Platz in Berlin", Reich capital of Germania 1942: photograph of a model by Albert Speer, showing green spaces with groups of trees, fountains and sculptures in the style of 18th-century gardens, the reverse with inscription and stamp "Staatliche Bildstelle Berlin", bent, dimensions approx. 38 x 59 cm. Comes with a close-up photograph of the buildings at the "Großer Platz" 1942, a replica true to scale of the Reichstag building: the copper-clad cupola was meant to tower 230 metres above the city. With cover foil, giving the background a darker colour. On the reverse with notes by Speer and a "Zeit-Magazin" stamp, as this picture was probably printed in a magazine, dimensions approx. 29 x 32 cm.Speer’s plan for the city included two broad traffic arteries on the north-south and the east-west axes; the two were to intersect at the Reich Chancellery. The most important component of the "Germania model" was the "Hall of Fame". This domed building of granite and marble was supposed to function as a place of worship for the Nazi cult and an assembly hall, accommodating as many as 180,000 people. Work was halted in the spring of 1943 on account of the military situation.Provenance: From family possession.Condition: II

It also holds the distinction of being the first model of 'Esperance' constructed by Townsend, certified with the number 001. The careful construction and keen attention to detail are clear throughout the model. The full size vessel 'Esperance' is believed to be the first twin screw steam yacht according to the Lloyds' Yacht Register, and is the oldest boat recorded on the Register ahead of 'Raven'.The full size vessel was constructed on the Clyde by T.B. Seath & Co to serve the Furness industrialist H.W. Schneider. Due to the all-weather use demanded by her owner at Bowness, the bow of 'Esperance' was heavily raked in order to break through light ice. By the end of the 19th century, ownership of 'Esperance' had changed to that of the Ferry Hotel, which used the vessel to transport guests to the hotel for afternoon tea, or up the lake for services at the nearby Wray church. In popular culture she is perhaps best known as the beloved houseboat of Captain Flint in Arthur Ransome's 1930 novel Swallows and Amazons, with the vessel actually being used in the BBC adaption. In his acclaimed novel, Arthur Ransome describes the vessel as 'a long narrow craft with a high raised cabin roof, and a row of glass windows along her side. Her bows were like the bows of an old-time clipper. Her stern was like that of a steamship'. In 1941 the 'Esperance' sank in the lake but was salvaged from the water by T.C. Pattinson. The full size vessel of 'Esperance' is currently in the collection of the renowned Windemere Jetty Museum, and the Victorian façade of the Esperance pier also survives to the present day. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Experts agree that approximately 2300 copies were produced in stainless steel – approximately 700 in gold – and only a very small number with 'Paul Newman' three colours dials/First appearing in the early 1960s, this 'exotic' dial manufactured by Singer was renamed the 'Paul Newman' by collectors after the American actor wore the watch in promotional posters for the film 'Winning' and throughout his private life. By sinking the subsidiary dials and outer scale within the opaque black dial background, the dial achieves an unusual three-dimensionality and an instantly recognisable look.Arguably no other watch has ever captured the imagination of the collector's world in the same way that the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona has. In recent years this model in all its different incarnations has built up an almost mythical reputation. With its iconic design and the photos on Paul Newman's wrist the exotic Daytona dial truly represents the dream of watch collecting. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 610

The Wolseley Hall Overmantel: A rare Elizabeth I carved oak overmantel, circa 1580, with family coat of arms and royal cypher adjustments circa 1630 Having three panels, each enclosed by a flower centred scale-carved arch, with an egg-and-dart lower edge and leafy-carved spandrels, each pillar carved with a single carnation stem, each outer panel carved with a Tudor double rose slipped and crowned, with ‘mastic’ inlaid and gilt-painted royal cypher ‘CR’, presumably for Charles I, the central panel with an applied armorial, carved with the MARITAL ARMS OF WOLSELEY AND WROUGHTON, spaced and flanked by Ionic capital and strapwork carved pilasters, with lunette-carved stepped cushion-moulded base rail, height 59.5cm, width 174cm The arms are blazoned as follows: (dexter) Argent a talbot passant gules (with the Baronet’s augmentation in the dexter chief)  - for Wolseley (sinister) Argent a chevron gules between three boars’ head couped sable - for Wroughton (The impales arms have a crescent, surmounting both the Wolsey and Wroughton arms. In this instance it should have only appeared on the arms of Wolsey, as the cadency mark for a second son) The arms undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Sir Robert Wolsey (b.1587, d.1646) of Morton and Wolseley, Staffordshire, the 1st Baronet of Wolseley, and Mary Wroughton (b.1605/7, d.1671).  Robert was the second son of John Wolseley and his wife Isabella Porter.  Mary Wroughton was the second daughter of Sir George Wroughton of Wilcot, Wiltshire and his wife Ann Gibbs.  Robert and Mary married circa 1630.  Robert was created a Baronet on the 24 November 1628. Prior to this date Robert acquired the family estate of Wolseley from a distant cousin, Sir Thomas Wolseley.  Robert served as the Clerk to the King’s Letters Patent and as a Colonel in the King’s Army This overmantel was presumable at one time in situ within the ancient Manor House of Wolseley Hall, Colwich, Staffordshire. The estate was held by the Wolseley family from the 11th century.  Sir Robert Wolsey was a staunch Royalist and it would stand to reason he added the Royal Cypher, along with his own coat of arms to an existing Elizabethan overmantel within the Hall

JOHN ATKINSON GRIMSHAW (BRITISH 1836-1893) GLASGOW DOCKS Oil on canvas Signed and dated `1887+' (lower right) 58 x 88cm (22¾ x 34½ in.)Provenance: Sale, Sotheby's, London, 5th June 1996, lot 71 `Over the last forty years, Atkinson Grimshaw's beautiful, evocative paintings of moonlit suburban lanes, gas-lit city streets, and docksides have emerged as some of the most popular works of the Victorian age' writes Jane Sellers in her introduction to the 2011 exhibition Atkinson Grimshaw, Painter of Moonlight. Docks scenes became one of the artists most recognisable subjects and reflect the importance of trade, empire, and industrialisation in Victorian Britian. Grimshaw turned to his subject matter in the mid-1870s, replacing his earlier Pre-Raphaelite landscapes with cityscapes painted in a Whistlerian manner. By 1885, he had moved from Leeds to London and lived and worked in Manresa Studios in Chelsea where he would have met Whistler, whose studio in Tite Street was nearby. He returned to Leeds in 1887, the year that the present picture was painted. By this time, he was represented by Agnew's, the leading art dealer of the period. His work frequently appeared in their stock books selling through their galleries in London, Manchester, and Liverpool or through their considerable connections in Glasgow. Glasgow provided more than half of Britain's shipping tonnage and a quarter of all locomotives worldwide in the 1870s, leading to it being named "the Second City of the Empire". Most of Grimshaw's dock scenes have similar compositions, with a long central vista of the street, flanked on one side by shops and the other with masts and rigging. They are a masterclass in his ability to depict numerous light sources. The rich golden glow of the shop windows is reflected on the wet pavements and the figures walking by, while the soft moonlight silhouettes the ships at anchor. He repeated the same subjects on various sized canvases, the largest being to the same scale as the present picture. The most comparable example of Grimshaw's Glasgow Docks sold for £480,000, (Sale, Sotheby's London, 10th December 2014, lot 30.). Condition Report: The painting has been strongly lined with a wax adhesive onto a heavy canvas. A false loose linen lining has been pulled onto the stretcher behind this lining. The lining is present to support the canvas in the area of a number of horizontal losses located across the upper foreground. These losses have been filled and retouched but are clearly visible when viewed using transmitted light, (strong light shone through the canvas from the back). The adhesion within the work is sound and the picture is structurally stable. The restoration paint extends beyond the paint losses and appears to have been applied in a rather general way. There is some restoration to the buildings on the left of the picture, to thinness caused by over cleaning. This restoration, although difficult to see under UV examination leaves the brick work and windows of the facade lacking the translucency typical for the artist in such areas. Both of the carriages and the wet ground in front of them bear a considerable amount of retouching. Examination under UV light does not fully show the extent of the retouching present. Measurements with frame: 81 x 111.5cmCondition Report Disclaimer
