ZANGWILL ISRAEL: (1864-1926) British Author, in the vanguard of cultural Zionism during the 19th century. T.L.S., Israel Zangwill, one page, 4to, East Preston, Sussex, 1st July 1924, to Dr. Landman. Zangwill thanks his correspondent for their letter and apologises for being 'unable to do a stroke of work' explaining, 'Switzerland only increased my insomnia, and now that I am at home and under medical treatment, there are as yet few signs of its passing' Zangwill continues, 'Moreover, I fear you do not realize what a complex theme you have suggested. It would require as much thought as a treatise, however briefly expressed: and even if the Jewish Chronicle which pays at least double your rate, desired the same article I should be ill-repaid for the distraction from my long-neglected Jewish novel' and concludes, 'I pointed out to you in New York that your scale of payment is disproportionate to my position in letters…' With light age toning to the upper edge, and two very small tears to the central horizontal and vertical folds, otherwise VGIsaac Landman (1880-1946) American Reform Rabbi, Author, and anti-Zionist activist.
SPENDER STEPHEN: (1909-1995) English Poet, Novelist, and Essayist. A.L.S., Stephen Spender, one page, 4to, London, 19th March 1971, to Ray Roberts, on the printed stationery of the Department of English, University College London. Spender informs his correspondent, in part, 'I am very honoured of the suggestion that I should do a biography of Dame Edith. At present however I am so busy here that I do not want to use what time I have for anything involving research and study. I want to write poems & stories… regretfully I am afraid I must decline your offer.' Together with an unsigned typed carbon copy letter from Ray Roberts, one page, n.p., 26th January 1971, to Spender, stating, in part, 'For some years now I have wanted to secure and publish a full-scale biography of Edith Sitwell…Given the texture of the letters between you and Dame Edith, I wonder if you would consider doing such a study?' With very minor age wear, otherwise VG, 2
CHAGALL MARC: (1887-1985) Russian-French Artist. A good, unusual signed 5 x 3.5 photograph of Chagall standing in a full length pose, with a paint brush in one hand as he works on a figure within a large painting which is rolled out on the floor beneath him. Signed in blue ink with his name alone to a clear area at the base of the image and again signed and inscribed to the verso, and dated twice in his hand, Antibes 1967 and Paris 1971. The original Kodak photograph bears the small printed date of February 1967 to the lower white border. VG 1967 was a productive year for Chagall, in which he worked on several stained-glass windows, and the Louvre in Paris exhibited seventeen large scale paintings and other works under the title 'Message Biblique'. However, the present image perhaps shows the artist working on his set design for a new production of Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) which opened in February 1967.
OSBORNE JOHN: (1929-1994) English Playwright. Autograph manuscript, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1993). The manuscript page of notes, evidently part of a larger working draft, states, in part, 'Not since the great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755, when the total shaken area was four times that of Europe, (30 people were killed, and 11,000 buildings destroyed within six minutes, has a natural, if freakish phenomenon… caused such apocalyptic hysteria as the catastrophic collapse of the Royal heir's marriage… the latest reading on the Richter-Saxe-Windsor-Coburg scale of one to twelve… have shown as in 1936 a leap from his uncle's score of between six (“felt by all… some heavy furniture moved, damage slight, to nine “damage considerable… buildings shifted off foundations… this has suddenly been identified as the Windsor Fault, first recorded with the abdication of the present heirs uncle in 1936. Applying the Richter scale of one to twelve, this would give a reading of from six… to nine'Together with an A.L.S., John Osborne, to the verso of a picture postcard reproduction of Mark Gerson's portrait of the playwright incorporating the façade of the Royal Court Theatres and their production of Look Back in Anger, n.p., 2nd June 1993, to Karl Heinz Fleitmann. Osborne wishes his correspondent well and sends the page of manuscript ('recent scribbles') which he adds relates to a piece about the monarchy which he had written for an English journal. Scarce in this form. VG to EX, 2
