Attributed to James Northcote (1746-1831) - Oil on canvas - Portrait of an elderly lady wearing a black dress with lace drape, signed J. Northcote, pinx 1803, verso inscribed Northcote No.7, 79cm x 65cm Northcote's account book for 1803 lists 'Mrs Smith a head in black drapery, 20 guineas/also the frame 3 guineas, all paid'. An impressively detailed plank-on-frame model fitted with masts, fully rigged with ‘rope’ and dead eyes, planked decking, capstan, ships wheel, 42 cannon, long boats, flags, ships figurehead, etc. An example clad with a copper bottom.
