TIM STEAD and JÜRGEN TÜBBECKE, An Impressive and Important Oak, Brass and Chrome Timepiece, Number 27, Designed by Tim Stead in Galashiels, the clockmaker Jürgen Tübbecke, circa 2000, Wall mounted, with a glazed pendant shaped case enclosing a skeleton dial, with Roman Numerals, a subsidiary seconds gear, signed J Tübbecke, nu 27, Galashiels, the case 60cm high. The dial is cunningly fitted below the very tall oak and brass pendulum, 190cm long; this in turn suspends from the open brass movement with single train, lever escapement, 64cm high; a separate pulley mount suspends a 51cm pendulum weight; also including a long chrome and brass winding pole, with turned wood (possibly holly or boxwood) handles, overall height is approximately 350cm depending on pulley placement when mounted. It is not clear what the time duration of this clock is...the adjustable pendulum drop suggests it could be longer than typical 8 days. Note: This is a rare opportunity to purchase a very fine example of Tim Stead’s work. The two makers also collaborated on the famous ‘Millenium Clock’ currently in the main halls at The National Museum of Scotland. Tim sadly died relatively recently and his home has been acquired and turned into a study centre and museum of his works. This is managed by the Tim Stead Trust and ‘The Steading’ is well worth booking to see locally. Tim was an extraordinary designer of all things in wood, and had a very particular style. He is perhaps the Robert Thompson, better known as ‘Mouseman’ of our age. Tim described his furniture as ‘Sculpture in Disguise’. The mock up image I created is to give an idea of scale. The actual clock face can clearly hang at head level if the overall piece is placed high on a wall on within a stairwell. It is unlikely the face was ever meant to placed by a persons feet!

Sheet 43H covers all of Greece and Albania with parts of Turkey (Turkey in Europe and the western seabord of Turkey in Asia), Yugoslavia (south). There is also an inset map of Crete. Sheet 43G covers all of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and parts of Yugoslavia (north-east); the USSR (south west); Bulgaria (north-central and eastern areas) and Albania (north). A footnote refers to “approximate frontiers June 1948”. Measures approx 90x78cm.
